ARLINGTON — Rescue workers stayed in the scene almost all day Tuesday looking for the occupants of a plane that crashed just west of the Wilcox County community Monday afternoon.
According to reports, the plane went down during a period of intense weather Monday afternoon. Unofficial sources said the plane, which was on its way from Panama City, Fla. to Tulsa, Okla. was attempting to make an emergency landing at the airport in Pine Hill when it lost radio contact and disappeared from the radio scope.
Early Monday afternoon, area law enforcement agencies received a "BOLO" — "Be On The Lookout" — from area dispatch centers looking for the plane.
As lawmen and other emergency responders scoured the area, a Civil Air Patrol plane from Camden spotted the wreckage of the plane just west of Arlington in a big clearcut on the north side of Wilcox County Road 32.
One body was reportedly found in the wreckage, which represented about half the plane. The remainder of the wreckage, as well as a second body, were found by a helicopter and search crews who were scouring the area Tuesday.
Authorities have not released the names of those killed in the crash but the plane was described as a Piper Malibu, a single-engine Turbo-prop plane that features a pressurized cabin.
Members of the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Department, the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Department and the Pine Hill Volunteer Fire Department participated in the search while the accident is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.
