Tommy D. Allen

Tommy D. Allen, 60, of Bessemer died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004 at U. A. B. West in Bessemer. Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 25, 1 p.m., at Midway Baptist Church in Dickinson with Rev. William H. Sharp, Jr. officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Hutchinson of Bessemer and Jennifer Leach of Thomasville; one brother, John (Maudine) Allen of Dickinson; three sisters, Lena Mae Pruitt of Bessemer, Nell Ree Allen of Dickinson and Dorothy Stuart of Jackson; and six great-grandchildren.

Corene Hill Flowers

Corene Hill Flowers, 78, of Linden died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004 at her home. Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 26, 2 p.m., at Linden Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Harris officiating. Interment followed at Linden Memorial Park.

Mrs. Flowers was a retired secretary at the Marengo County Health Department and was a member of the Linden Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, James Larry (Dot) Wingate, Sr. of Linden; one daughter, Joyce Wingate (Kenneth) Barrineau of Linden; one sister, Irene Hill Tucker of Sweet Water; four grandsons, James Larry Wingate, Jr., Scott Wingate, Derrick Barrineau and David Barrineau; and one granddaughter Dana Barrineau.

Pallbearers were James Larry Wingate, Jr., Scott Wingate, Derrick Barrineau, David Barrineau, Heath Crowe, Ronald Tucker, Andy Etheredge and Danny Flowers.

Honorary pallbearers were Gwen Trimble, Janet Essex, Betty Cottrell, Dorothy Rudolph, Rosetta Lockett, Celetta Lockett, Tanita Mair and the Bryan Whitfield Home Health Care nurses.

Moselzell Grant

Moselzell Grant, 66, of Dixons Mills died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004 in Dixons Mills. Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 24, 8 p.m., at Rockbabylon Baptist Church in Dixons Mills with Rev. Norris Pauley officiating. Interment followed at Polly Robinson Cemetery in Dixons Mills.

Survivors inlude his wife, Dorothy Grayson Grant; one son; three daughters; his father, Moses Grant; his mother, Adell Dunning; three brothers; six sisters; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were classmates and friends.

Ella Lucille Prichett Griffin

Ella Lucille Prichett Griffin, 82, of Dixons Mills died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 in Dixons Mills. Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 25, 12 noon, at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church in Dixons Mills with Rev. John Dees officiating. Interment followed at Shiloh Cemetery in Dixons Mills.

Preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Willie Griffin.

Survivors include five sons and one god son; four daughters; 35 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

N. Roscoe Griffin

N. Roscoe Griffin, a native Alabamian who served as pastor at Alabama Baptist churches in Cirtonelle, Bessemer, Sheffield and Thomasville and also in Monticello, Arkansas, died after a brief illness on Sept. 25, 2004 at Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham. He was 87. Graveside services were held Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. at Choctaw Corner Cemetery in Thomasville.

Mr. Griffin was born in the Chilton community near Grove Hill on Aug. 5, 1917. In his early childhood years, his family moved to Mobile where he attended public schools. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1935. He graduated with honors from Howard College in 1940, serving as president of Trident, the honor society, in his senior year.

In 1967, he left the full-time duties of church ministry and moved to Clarke County where he served as part-time pastor at Round Hill Baptist Church in Thomasville. He was an ardent student of Clarke County and Alabama history and played a key role in the formation and development of the Clarke County Museum. Also, during the nineteen-seventies, he served as trustee of Mobile College.

He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, Gladys Scott Griffin, who died in 2001.

Survivors include his three sons, John Scott Griffin (Faye O’Gwynn) of Charleston, W. Va., William Boyd Griffin (Julianne Jakstas) of New Haven, Conn. and Paul David Griffin (Kathleen Dobbins) of Birmingham; one sister, Winnie Lea Pennington of Mobile; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dr. Reese Maxwell Holifield

Dr. Reese Maxwell Holifield, 78, of Demopolis died Sept. 22, 2004 at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 26 at First United Methodist Church of Demopolis with Dr. Art Luckie and Rev. Aaron Raulerson officiating. Interment followed at Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery in Heiberger.

Dr. Holifield was born June 15, 1926 in Heiberger and at the age of 17 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. In WWII, he served as a military policeman in Okinawa and Korea. Upon completion of the military service, he returned to complete his high school education. He graduated as salutatorian from Perry County High School in 1947. He received his undergraduate in chemistry at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and then entered the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham receiving his MD degree in 1955. He served a one year rotating internship with emphasis on surgery at Carraway Methodist Hospital. In 1956, Dr. Holifield moved to Demopolis and filled a void in the medical community left by Dr. Guy Dunning in downtown Demopolis. In 1965, he established the Holifield Clinic in Demopolis and practiced medicine there for 48 years until his death.

During his tenure in Demopolis, Dr. Holifield received the following honors and recognitions: Diplomat American Board of Family Practice, Fellow of American Academy of Family Physicians, member of State of Alabama Medical Association, Marengo County Medical Association- past president, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, Physician’s Recognition Award from Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the American Medical Association, charter member of UAB Caduceus Club, Marengo County Historical Society, University of Alabama Alumni Scholarship sponsor and Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce- citizen of the year award 1982.

Preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Thomas Holifield and three brothers, Julian T. Holifield, Ellis Holifield and Davee Holifield.

Survivors include his wife Angela Northcutt Holifield of Demopolis and daughters, Ashleigh Elizabeth and Emily Kathryn Holifield. Surviving children of Reese and Sara Middlebrooks Holifield are Reese M. Holifield, Jr. of Demopolis and Thomas C. Holifield (Cyndi) of Providence, Teressa (Dr. Robert) Craddock of Birmingham, Nancy (Dr. Mark) Prysi of Naples, Fla. and sisters; Louise Sims of Montgomery and Eloise Phelps (Ben) of Marion; brothers, Dozier Holifield (Kathryn) of Green Pond and Burford (Joanne) Holifield of Columbus, Ga.; and seven grandchildren, Quenton Craddock, Christina Holifield, Josh Holifield, Max Craddock, Reesa Holifield, Sara Prysi and Brooke Prsyi.

Pallbearers were Quenton Craddock, Maxwell Craddock, Mark Prysi, Dr. Bob Craddock, Greg Holifield, Mike Moore, Nathan Sims and Kenny Holifield.

Honorary pallbearers were Holifield Clinic Staff, Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital doctors and staff, Brookwood Medical Center doctors and staff, Dr. Judy Travis, Clarence King, Mike Cevasco, Wilbur Atkeison, E. P. Griffith, Jr. and William Collins.

Buster Huggins

Buster Huggins, 87, of Thomasville died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004 at Willow Trace Nursing Home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. at Elam Baptist Church in Thomasville with Rev. Warren Huggins, Rev. Jimmy Simpkins and Rev. Rodney Mullins officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery.

Mr. Huggins was a member of the Bashan Baptist Church and was a truck driver.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Dailey and Louise Kane, both of Thomasville; two sisters, Inez McIntyre and Eunice Keel, both of Grove Hill; three grandsons, Perry Dailey, George Dailey and Joseph Kane, all of Thomasville; one granddaughter, Loretta Gibson of Thomasville; three great-granddaughters, Lindsey Gibson, Summer Dailey and Cayleigh Miller, all of Thomasville; two great-grandsons, Cole Bishop and Colby Blake, both of Thomasville; and two step grandchildren, Pattie Erskine of Foley and Kris Kane of Thomasville.

Pallbearers were James Keel, Rex Rush, Mike Godwin, Ray Jordan, Tony Gilchrist and Roger Keel. Honorary pallbearers were Mack Noble, Mark Dozier, Vaiden Dozier, Rayford Parnell, Pete Morrison and William “Went” Noble.

Catherine Whitted James

Catherine Whitted James, 71, of Dixons Mills died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004 at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2 p.m., at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses. Interment followed at Woodard Cemetery in Pennington.

Mrs. James was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include four sons; four daughters; her parents, John and Estella Pringle Whitted; 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her sons, grandsons and son-in-laws.
