Pine Hill approves a lean budget

The Town of Pine Hill approved a combined $1.46 million budget Monday night.

The budget includes $530,000 for the city's general fund, more than $800,000 for the water department, and an estimated $43,300 for the street department.

The city's expenditures for the 2005-2006 fiscal year remained under budget, while revenues came in slightly higher than projected. But, Mayor Harry Mason said, the city would have a challenge continuing that trend next year.

The town received no bids on the house in front of city hall. The town purchased the house and lot to create more parking. A minimum bid of $5,000 was put as a requirement. With no bids received, Mason was given authority by the council to negotiate a price with Harry Morgan for removal of the structure.

Council member Virginia Adams announced the city would be applying for a grant from the University of Alabama for professional services. The town could qualify for up to $20,000 in grant funds.

The grant proposal would provide for training of volunteers to provide emergency preparedness seminars in conjunction with emergency management experts for the communities in Pine Hill. Plans also call for putting together emergency preparedness packages for Pine Hills residents.

The focus of the training and packages would be for natural disasters.

Pine Hill's wastewater treatment plant will require improvements, reported Dusty McDanel, utility superintendent. ADEM is requiring the town to increase the size of ponds used when the treatment plant back flushes its filtering system. A request for bids will be going out soon.

Pat Martin of Cahaba Mental Health provided an update of services provided in the area by the center and requested that Pine Hill continue its local funding share of the center. Mason said the town's annual contribution was already in the budget.

In other announcements, F.S. Irvin's Homecoming parade will be held Oct. 24 at 10 a.m.

The Pine Hill Volunteer Fire Department will hold a barbecue fundraiser Nov. 3.
