Danny D'Andrea, Alabama Power's Thomasville and Butler manager, and Gilbertown Mayor Bobby Graham look at map showing proposed corridors for a proposed north-south freeway that would run through west Alabama from Mobile or Baldwin counties on the south to the Muscle Shoals area in the Tennessee River Valley on the north. A "public involvement meeting" was held last Thursday at the Alabama Department of Transportation office in Grove Hill to get people's comments and thoughts on the suggested routes. Over 50 citizens attended but only one Clarke County official showed up-Grove Hill Councilman Levon Hicks, Gilbertown Mayor Bobby Graham and State Rep. Nick Williams, R-Sims Chapel. Grove Hill Councilman Levon Hicks. Two of the proposed corridors crisscross in Clarke County. Most people were concerned about any new road taking their homes or property and few commented on the potential economic benefits that such a route could bring. A similar hearing will be held at the Demopolis Civic Center tonight (Thursday) from 5 until 7 p.m. ALDOT officials say the project is still in the study stage. It will be years before a north-south road is built, if it is ever built.
