Our View We apologize for jumping the gun in last week's editorial. As we understood the process, Monday night's council meeting would have been counted as the second public input meeting regarding the zoning ordinance. Mayor Sheldon Day has maintained throughout the process that there would be two public input meetings on the ordinance. Acting on that information, we believed the council could have taken its long-standing tradition of suspending its own rules to immediately vote on the measure after a period of additional comment. Thus, last week's editorial was critical of what seemed to be rush to enact the ordinance now in its maturing stages. But Mayor Day clarified the issue this week saying that the only action to be taken by the council at Monday's meeting would be to accept the proposed ordinance from the city's planning commission. That's all that happened Monday night. He went on to say there would be a second public input meeting like the one attended by about 60 people in September. We're happy to see the mayor and council taking a patient and prudent approach to such a wide-ranging issue. We also still support the enacting of a zoning ordinance in Thomasville. The current one may not be perfect in all ways, but it is a necessary step towards managing Thomasville's growth in positive ways.
