Whippets blank Marengo
The Marengo High School Panthers were back in action this past Friday night, October 6, after an open date on week five of the season. Unfortun-ately for the Panthers their return to the gridiron was not a pleasant one. Instead of coming home from their foray into Monroe County with a region win over the Frisco City Whippets, the Panthers found themselves coming up on the short end of a 47-0 shellacking. In the game, the home standing Whippets, who are currently ranked number one in region one play, scored 13 points in the first quarter then added 21 in the second to take a commanding 34-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Panther defense, which appeared to be completely unable to stop the Whippets in the first half, bowed their neck in the final two quarters limiting Frisco City to six points in the third period and seven in the fourth. Leading the Panther charge on defense in the losing effort was Kaylos Pritchett with 12 tackles followed by Larrence Pritchett with 10 and Ontarrio Woods with six. Three Marengo defenders, Quentin Bouler, D. J. Brown, and Donte Packer had a sack against the Whippets while Ronnie Hildreth picked off a pass and Michael Watkins recovered a fumble. Over on the offensive side of the ball, the Panthers who gained a total of 64 yards against the relentless Frisco City defense, were led in the rushing department by Ronnie Hildreth with 32 yards on 14 carries followed by D. J. Brown with 28 yards on six carries. In the air freshman quarterback James Bennett who was 1 for 3 for only two yards, still drew praise from Panther Coach Scottie Jones for stepping in at the last minute for the injured senior signal caller Keldred Bouler. "I thought James did a good job running the offense especially considering the short time he had to prepare for filling Keldred's shoes," Jones said. With the loss the Panthers fall to 3-2 on the season and 2 and 2 in region play and find themselves desperately needing to win at least two of their next three games if they have any hope of getting into the state playoffs. The critical three game run starts this Friday, October 13 when they host the Fruitdale Pirates in their 2006 Homecoming Game. Kickoff for the game is set for 7:00 PM in "The Swamp".
