New Era announces expansion New Era Cap announced Tuesday it will be expanding its manufacturing facility in Jackson to support its continued growth in the headwear business. The expansion is scheduled to be complete by spring 2007. Critical production operations currently running out of the Mobile facility will be transferred to Jackson, namely the fabric cutting, heat seal and finished cap embroidery functions. To accommodate the extra operations, the Jackson facility will close to double in size, increasing from 67,500 square feet to 117,500 square feet. This move will provide for much needed additional distribution space to the existing Mobile facility, which serves as one of New Era's a key distribution hubs continuing to ship caps to customers all over the world, according to a company press release. "This move provides greater flexibility from an overall manufacturing standpoint to meet increased customers' needs," said Tim Freer, New Era's vice president of Global Human Resources. "This large scale project will benefit both New Era and the City of Jackson making this a win-win situation. We have a tremendous team of people in our current Jackson operation." "Alabama has experienced tremendous economic growth over the past several years, and one of the major contributing factors to that growth is the tremendous work ethic of the Alabama people. New Era Cap's willingness to expand in Jackson only reiterates that fact. The additional jobs and capital investment created by the expansion will go a long way in helping the people of Clarke County," Gov. Bob Riley said. Jackson Mayor Richard Long said, "The municipal government, the Industrial Development Board and the City are delighted that New Era has chosen to expand their operation in the City of Jackson," said Mayor Richard Long. "The expansion of the existing facility will create additional jobs at the operation and will also allow for additional growth in the future." Once the expansion is complete, approximately 40 people will initially be added to the team in Jackson. The Mobile employees affected will have the opportunity to transfer to the Jackson facility. New Era will be working with employees who chose to remain at the Mobile facility by trying to absorb them into the distribution component over the next several months. "I am excited about this opportunity because this is what the I.D. Board is all about: Creating jobs for the citizens of the Jackson area," Industrial Development Board Chairman Paul Parham stated. The Clarke County Economic Development Partnership is working in conjunction with the City of Jackson on the project. "It is always encouraging when we are able to work with existing business and industry to meet their expansion needs," said Debra Bolen, Executive Director of the Partnership.
