ASCC students to go to Washington

Edward Andrews and Shelia McGrew
Alabama Southern Advanced Technology students Shelia McGrew, of Silas, and Edward Andrews, of Fulton, have been selected to attend the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Principal Investigators Conference on October 18 - 20, 2006 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. hosted by the National Science Foundation and the American Association of Community Colleges. They will be joined by other students, ATE alumni, ATE program leaders, and representatives from industry and government as the ATE program focuses on and examines the role of U.S. Technicians in the Global Workforce.

"This is an exciting opportunity for me to truly experience how other Advanced Technology education programs work," said McGrew. "I believe that I can share positive experiences that have occurred with my education in the programs at Alabama Southern. My experiences have provided me with valuable knowledge in my chosen career field."

These students were chosen based on application and essay requirements. They will participate in a showcase session on October 19 highlighting Alabama Southern's advanced technology program of study. Along with the showcase, students will have the opportunity to participate in roundtable sessions, ATE Student Panel sessions and be formally recognized for their achievements by the National Science Foundation during a Student/Alumni Recognition Breakfast.

"I hope to bring any information gained during the visit to the ATE conference back to Alabama Southern and the community and share with students, instructors and others involved with the advanced technology programs," said Andrews.

McGrew and Andrews are both working towards an associate's degree in Paper and Chemical Technology and are both attending Alabama Southern on scholarships from Louisiana Pacific, a member of the Alabama Southern Industry Alliance for a Technologically Advanced Workforce.
