Lower Dixie prepares new home

Site preparation is underway by the first entrant into the Thomasville South Industrial Park. Early 2007 is the expected completion date for Lower Dixie Timber's new ten acre facility. The planned $400,000 capital investment includes a building that will serve as home to Lower Dixie Timber Company, Lower Dixie Logging and LD Land. It will also house satellite offices for Tutt Real Estate and Tutt Management.

Lower Dixie is a leading timber dealership in Southwest Alabama and Southeast Mississippi, covering ten counties throughout both regions. The company specializes in timber harvesting, cruising, and marketing, as well select cutting, clear cutting and plantation thinning.

The company was founded in 1991, by Joe Lewis, Marshall Parten and T. J. Pope. Gradually adding production crews, it has grown to over 55 employees. Affiliate companies include full-service real estate and land management operations. Current owners are Joe Lewis, Marshall Parten and Walter Tutt. Over the next two years, an additional ten individuals will be added.

The owners cite trustworthiness, honesty and integrity as the basis for doing business at Lower Dixie. They take pride in the fact that the company is known, by clients and competitors alike, for sincerity and reliability. Marshall Parten exemplifies this attitude. When asked in 1991, with two boys in school, why he would become a partner in the new business, he states "that it was a faith driven decision which occurred after many prayers. I had declined similar opportunities in the past. Starting Lower Dixie was the right decision made at the right time, with the right partners. God has blessed us."

Carroll Scarbrough, the Chairman of the Thomasville Industrial Board, praised company owners for Lower Dixie's flexibility in working with the board and city regarding site selection. "We appreciate the company moving forward with the new facility. We expect it to prompt other development in the park."

The Industrial Board currently has multiple letters of intent for the Thomasville South Industrial Park. Mayor Sheldon Day adds, "Lower Dixie's current and previous expansions play a vital role in Thomasville's economy and make it a well-respected leader in our market."
