The Sweet Water Bulldogs clinched the lA Region 4 championship this past Friday, October 20, when they pounded the Stallions of South Lamar High School 48-7. In the process they made their Head Coach Stacy Luker a happy man. "I am very proud of our team," Luker said. "This was a big win for us. It is the first time since 2002 that we have won the region championship." With the win Sweet Water improved to 6-1 on the season and 5-0 in the region.

In the game, which was played in Sweet Water, the Bulldogs pounded out 20 first downs and accumulated 471 yards of offense while holding their opponents to seven first downs and only 169 yards. Possibly the most glaring statistic within those numbers was the rushing totals which showed the Bulldogs holding a 390 to 37 advantage. "I thought we set the tone early and played well on both sides of the ball in this one," Stacy Luker said. "Our offensive and defensive fronts took control from the outset and never let up."

By all accounts Luker's observations were correct as the Bulldog offense drew first blood scoring on a 55-yard dash by Anthony Landrum with 10:05 to play in the first quarter. Ty Glass added the extra-point and Sweet Water had the early 7-0 lead.

Neither team crossed the magic stripe in the balance of the first quarter but the Bulldogs added to their lead early in the second when Dominic Holt plunged in from one yard out for Sweet Water's second score. Ty Glass was on the mark again and the Bulldogs had increased their lead to 14-0 with 11:18 to play in the second period

The Bulldogs did not rest on their laurels but went right back to work in their next possession adding to their lead yet again when Anthony Landrum scampered in from 17 yards out with 6:23 still remaining in the second quarter. Glass booted the extra-point through and Sweet Water's lead stood at 21-0.

The Stallions did manage to get on the scoreboard next striking gold on a 59-yard pass play with 2:03 left in the first half. The extra-point was good and South Lamar had cut the Sweet Water lead to 21-7.

Although there hardly seemed to be enough time for the Bulldogs to answer the Stallion score before intermission, someone forgot to tell them. For with only :07 remaining in the first half Drew Luker hooked up with Travis Young on a seven yard touchdown pass. Ty Glass' kick was true and suddenly Sweet Water's lead was 28-7 as the teams headed for the locker room.

The third quarter was much like the first with the Bulldog defense shutting down the Stallion offense while the Bulldog offense was on he march for more points. The march produced results mid-way the quarter when Anthony Landrum scored his third touchdown of the night darting in from 10 yards out with 7:14 to play in the period. Ty Glass made it five in a row and Sweet Water led 35-7.

If that weren't enough the Bulldogs put the icing on the cake early in the fourth quarter scoring twice in less than two minutes. The first score came with 11:55 to play in the final quarter when Drew Luker called his own number barreling in from five yards out. Glass boomed it through and the Bulldogs led 42-7.

The second of the two and the final score for both teams in the game came with 10:12 left to play as Demaraquis Williams rambled 37 yards to pay dirt. Glass missed for the first time in the game making the final score 48-7.

Offensively the Bulldogs were led on the ground by Anthony Landrum with 142 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Dominic Holt followed him with 91 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. In the air Drew Luker connected on 7 of his 13 passes for 81 yards and one touchdown. The leaders in the pass receiving category were: Travis Young with three catches for 55 yards and one touchdown and Demaraquis Williams with two catches for 16 yards.

Meanwhile the stingy Bulldog defense was led by Dominic Holt with nine tackles, followed by Jacques Lockett with seven and Nakia Dennis with six. Two other Bulldogs, Anthony Landrum and Drew Luker had big defensive plays in the game with each of them recording an interception.

With the Region 4 Championship in hand the Bulldogs must turn their attention this week to the Hornets of John Essex High School who stand in the way of a clean sweep in the region for the Bulldogs. Coming in at 1-6 on the season the Hornets would appear to pose little threat to the Bulldogs but don't tell Coach Stacy Luker that. "We need to put the South Lamar game behind us and get mentally and physically ready to play John Essex," Coach Luker said. "We can't afford to take the Hornets lightly they will be playing for pride and could wipe away a lot of disappointment with a win over Sweet Water. Besides we want to win the Region like a true champion by going undefeated in region competition."

The game between John Essex and Sweet Water is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday, October 27, in Demopolis.
