Panthers double up Wildcats 38-19
The Marengo High Panthers got out to a 20 point first half lead over the visiting Millry Wildcats this past Friday, October 20, on their way to a key 38-19 region win. The homestanding Panthers used a powerful running game that racked up 318 yards and a bone hard defense to subdue the favored Wildcats. In the game the Panthers got things rolling in the first quarter when Keldred Bouler rambled 55 yards for the first touchdown of the night. D. J. Brown added the two-point conversion and the Panthers were on top 8-0. Things picked up again early in the second quarter when Panther quarterback James Bennett connected with Michael Watkins on a 19-yard touchdown pass. The try for two points came up short but the Panthers were on top at 14-0. The Panther defense got in on the scoring and extended the Marengo lead later in the second period when an alert Kenneth Jones scooped up a Wildcat fumble and raced 55 yards to the end zone. Once again the extra-point attempt was no good but the Panther lead was 20-0 as the teams left the field for halftime. Things tightened up some in the third quarter as the Wildcats began to fight their way back, scoring 13 points and grabbing some of the momentum. To the Panthers' credit, they would not stand by and watch the lead they had built in the first half crumble away and with a newly found resolve found a way to regain control of the game. The first step came in the third quarter when Keldred Bouler eluded the Wildcat defense scampering 81 yards for his second touchdown of the game. The extra-point attempt failed but the Panthers had matched the Wildcats' first score regaining the Panthers' 20 point advantage at 26-6. After Millry had cut into the lead at 26-13 with their second score in the third period, the Panthers began an offensive thrust that ended in a James Bennett one yard run to pay dirt early in the fourth quarter. The extra-point was missed again but with the touchdown the Panthers were back on top at 32-13. Although the Wildcats were able to score once more late in the final period, the Panthers put the icing on the cake mid-way the quarter when Ronnie Hildreth rumbled 15 yards for a touchdown. The extra-point like four others before was no good, making the final score 38-19. Leading the way on the ground for the Panther offense was Keldred Bouler with 180 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Following him was D. J. Brown with 68 yards and a two point conversion on eight carries and Ronnie Hildreth with 66 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. In the air James Bennett was 2 for 3 for 23 yards and one touchdown from his quarterback position. On the receiving end of Bennett's passes was Keldred Bouler with one catch for four yards and Michael Watkins with one catch for 19 yards and a touchdown. Over on defense the Panthers were led by Quentin Bouler with 19 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery followed by Kaylos Pritchett with 10 tackles and two sacks. Kenneth Jones also had a big defensive play for the Panthers advancing the fumble he recovered for a touchdown. Taking a moment to look back at the Panthers' big win over Millry, Marengo Head Coach Scottie Jones was complimentary of both his offense and defense. "Our defense played extremely well against Millry Friday night," the Panther Head Man said. "Besides causing four turnovers and scoring on one of them, they gave our offense the opportunities and field position they needed to score 32 points." As for the offense Jones had this to say. "I can't say enough about the effort of our offense against Millry. Our young linemen took another step forward in their maturing process and our backs ran hard and hit their holes like they are supposed to." Although Friday's win was a big one, the Panthers have very little time to savor it because they have to travel to McIntosh this Friday to play the Demons in another important region game, one that will ultimately determine the Panthers playoff status. "We've got to rise to the occasion again this Friday," Coach Scottie Jones said. "McIntosh is big and very explosive and we will have to play another great game to beat them." The game between Marengo and McIntosh is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday, October 27, in McIntosh.
