Gerald Stephens inducted to Hall of Fame

Gerald Stephens
Gerald H. Stephens was honored on Oct. 7 by his induction into the Sports Hall of Fame at Southwest Mississippi Community College located in Summit, Miss. Mr. Stephens was a member of the football team at SMCC in 1959 and 1960 and made the Junior College All-American in football. He received his Associate's Degree in 1961 and then transferred to the University of Alabama where he played football under the legendary Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. Stephens was a member of the national championship football team in 1961.

In the Resolution presented to Stephens at the induction ceremony, he was recognized for his contributions on the playing field and the honor he brought to the school as an athlete. The Resolution further stated he was a distinguished athlete and exemplified high ideals of sportsmanship on and off the field. The Resolution acknowledged his successful career in education and his involvement in church and community activities. A copy of the resolution and a picture will be placed in Horace C. Holmes Student Union Building.

The induction ceremony was part of the homecoming activities at SMCC. Inductees were honored at a reception, at the homecoming banquet and at halftime at the homecoming game. Mr. Stephens was presented with a 2006 Sports Hall of Fame plaque.

In his acceptance speech, Stephens expressed his gratitude and humility for the recognition and confidence placed in him by the alumni and leadership of Southwest Mississippi Community College.
