The earth is moving and work should begin in earnest on the Boardwalk Cottages development in downtown Thomasville.

Members of the Southwest Alabama Chamber of Commerce and the project developers held the official groundbreaking ceremony Thursday at the corner of Wilson Avenue and East Front Street.

Willard Corley, one of the developers, said the project has not changed since it was presented to the city's planning board and that he hopes to begin construction of the homes within weeks.

The project is waiting for the utility companies to put in buried lines that will serve the homes before actual construction begins.

The project calls for 17 townhouse style home to be built on the bluff overlooking the Norfolk Southern rail line.

The first phase will see the construction of six homes, with plans to build out the project six homes at a time.

While there has been significant interest in the project, rumors that all the home are sold are untrue. No price has been set for the homes at this time.

The project was originally announced in the summer of 2005. The city agreed to sell 3.5 acres of land for the project. The land was originally purchased from the railroad.

Total estimated value of the development is more than $3 million.
