Wreck claims the life of Dixons Mills man
A multi-vehicle accident early Monday morning on the Marengo County side of the Nanafalia bridge on Highway 10 resulted in the death of a Dixons Mills man. At approximately 6:34 a.m., a Marengo County school bus was traveling southbound on Riverview Road and came to a stop at the intersection with Highway 10 at the foot of the Nanafalia bridge, said Trooper John Reese of the Alabama State Troopers. A Beard Logging Company tractor-trailer truck came across the bridge headed east. Visibility was very bad due to dense fog, the trooper said. The school bus pulled into the roadway, attempting to make a left turn and was struck by the log truck. The log truck was driven by John Milton Beard of Gilbertown. The school bus was spun counter-clockwise and struck by a 2003 Ford F-350 pickup, driven by Jerry Lee Huckabee of Sweet Water, which was traveling westbound. The collision knocked the hood off the school bus, Trooper Reese said, and the hood struck a 1998 Honda Accord, driven by Sylvia Michelle Jones of Dixons Mills, going westbound on Highway 10. The school bus veered off the westbound shoulder and rested on its side. There were four students aboard the school bus, which was originally headed for Sweet Water High School: Kenneth Wilson, approximately 13-years-old; Santerreio Young, 16; Kanene Young, 12; and Gabrielle Young, eight. None were hurt seriously. Randall Thomas Lill of Sweet Water was the driver of the school bus. He was not injured, Reese said, but was transported to Thomasville Infirmary for observation. The log truck overturned spilling its load, the trooper said. A 1996 Ford F150 truck, traveling westbound, was struck by the log truck as it overturned. The driver, Noah Jones Poellnitz, 64, of Dixons Mills, was killed on impact. The F-150 truck was pushed back into a 2004 Dodge Ram, driven by Scott Bernard Rostas of Jackson, Ala., traveling westbound. A 2000 Honda Civic, driven by Ida Scott of Thomasville, also struck the logs that had spilled. All of the drivers and school bus occupants were transported to Thomasville Infirmary, expect for John Beard who was transported to Anderson Hospital in Meridian.
