Pioneer Day at Clarke County Museum Nov. 11

A variety of old-fashioned fun is scheduled for the Clarke County Museum's Sixth Annual Pioneer Day Saturday, Nov. 11. The free event, held on the Museum grounds from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature locals and others from across the state demonstrating what life was like for this area's early settlers.

Five new demonstrations, an 1812 frontier encampment, pine needle basket weaving, hewing logs and sweet gumming will be featured this year. Festival favorite Blue Heron will also have his Creek Indian Hunting Camp set up for visitors.

Live old-timey tunes by Winky Hicks and his band will be played throughout the day.

Among the other demonstrations are rope making, candle dipping, flintknapping, pottery, corn shelling, chair caning, campfire cooking, cross-cut sawing, shingle splitting, corn shelling and woodworking. Typical women's activities like rug hooking, quilting, clothes washing, rug hooking and butter churning will also be demonstrated. In addition there will be plenty of old-timey games for the kids including making corn shuck dolls and hats. Concessions will be available.

Storyteller Wanda Johnson will be telling southern tales during the event.

Sam Dale, hero of the Creek War and the Alamo, will make scheduled appearances throughout the day to tell about life on the Alabama frontier.

A new exhibit, "The Cold War in Clarke County," will open that day. It features artifacts from the Nuclear Age that were stored in the Clarke County Courthouse and were recently opened.

Admission to Pioneer Day is free. The Clarke County Museum is located at 116 West Cobb Street, just off U.S. Highway 43 in Grove Hill. For more information, call the Museum office at (251) 275-8684.
