Thomasville cleans up against Monroe
The game got underway with Monroe County getting the ball on the opening kickoff after Thomasville had won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. It was the Thomasville defense that set the tone for the game forcing a fumble on Monroe County's third play from scrimmage following the kickoff. After falling on the loose ball at the Monroe County 18-yard line, Thomasville was in the end zone quickly with James White darting in from seven yards out for score. Henrique Aguair added the extra-point and Thomasville was on top 7-0 with 9:45 remaining in the first quarter.
With the Thomasville defense keeping the pressure on, the homestanding Tiger offense continued to struggle and found themselves in punt formation again after three plays. Adding insult to injury, Thomasville's James White who had Thomasville's first two scores, got a hand on the punt causing it to plummet to the ground inside the Monroe County 20 yard line. Once again the opportunistic Thomasville offense didn't tarry finding the end zone with 2:15 left in the first when Jake Overstreet connected with Tysean Thompson on a 16 yard scoring strike. Aguair made it three in a row and Thomasville had increased their lead to 21-0.
That's the way things would stay in the first half although Thomasville saw two other scoring opportunities go by the way side; one on a fumble that ended a drive at the Monroe County 23 and another on a 37 yard field goal attempt that fell just short of the uprights. The Thomasville defense continued to play lights our however holding Monroe County to only one first down and 19 total yards in the half. Picking up where they left off in the first half, Thomasville found themselves with great field position to open the second half when an alert Joey Kidd, playing on the front line of the kickoff receiving team, grabbed Monroe County's squib kick at the Thomasville 49 yard line. From there Delvonte Harris took the hand off and raced 51-yards for another Thomasville touchdown as the third quarter clock registered 11:48. Cameron Dunegan's extra-point attempt sailed wide left but Thomasville's lead stood at 33-0. Hardly having time to catch their breath and get a drink of water, the Thomasville offense was back on the field again after the defense came up with yet another fumble at the Monroe County 22 yard line with 9:01 remaining in the third quarter. Once again Thomasville capitalized on their host's error when Harris punched it in from five yards out with 7:54 remaining in the third period. Dunegan was on the mark this time putting Thomasville on top 40-0. Substituting freely at this point Thomasville managed to score one more time when Charles Taylor blasted in from the one yard out with :38 remaining in the third period. Dunegan made it two in a row with his extra-point and Thomasville led 47-0. Monroe County managed to dodge a shutout scoring on a 75 yard run with 5:14 to play in the fourth quarter. A two-point conversion attempt failed making the final 47-6. Leading the charge on defense for Thomasville was Katrell Watters with eight tackles. Following him with six tackles each were; Alex Buford and Scipio Tolbert. Right on their heels with five tackles apiece were; James Jones and Brady Sullivan. Following him was; Roya Campbell with 42 yards on 10 carries and James White with 39 yards and three touchdowns on five carries. In the air Jake Overstreet was 2 for 6 for 25 yard and one touchdown. Tysean Thompson had both receptions for the 25 yards and a touchdown. With their final region game behind them now and the number two seed in the region locked up, the Thomasville Tigers will be turning their attention this week to arch rival Clarke County. In this year's installment of what has been referred to by some as the "back door brawl" the 8 - 1 Tigers will be traveling to Grove Hill to play the 7-2 Bulldogs who finished undefeated and first in their 3A region competition. Although the game has no playoff implications for either team it is a focal point of the intense rivalry between these two schools. Looking at the game Thomasville Coach Jack Hankins had this to say, "We will absolutely have our hands full with Clarke County Friday night. They aren't 7-2 for nothing. They have a very good football team." "On offense they have a very good offensive line and a pair of outstanding running backs who run down hill well and will bruise you. Their defense is typical Clarke County, very physical and quick," he continued. A very large crowd is anticipated for the game which is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff this Friday, Nov. 3 at H. G. Prim Stadium in Grove Hill.
