Panthers fall to Eagles in finale
The Marengo High School Panthers saw the regular season come to a close on a sour note this past Friday, November 3 when in-county rival A. L. Johnson beat them 32-6. In the game which was played on the Eagles home turf in Thomaston, the Panthers who were playing without three starters never could seem to get untracked. "We just did not play very well Friday night," Panther Head Coach Scottie Jones said. "A. L. Johnson has a very good football team and basically we never stepped up to the challenge. Sure it hurt us not having some of our starters but good teams find a way to get things done even when key players can't go. It just didn't happen for us." The home standing Eagles took charge in the game early scoring 26 unanswered points in the first half and then cruised to the 32-6 win. The Panthers only score in the game came in the fourth quarter when senior running back P. J. Brown rambled 70 yards for a touchdown. Leading the Panther rushing attack in the losing effort was Brown with 82 yards and one touchdown on seven carries. Following him was Ronnie Hildreth with 52 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback James Bennett was 1 for 3 for seven yards through the air. On defense sophomore Jeremy Bouler led the charge for the Panthers with 15 tackles. Despite the loss the Panthers who finished the season as the number three seed in Region 1 will be playing in the AHSAA State Playoffs. They will be traveling to play the South Lamar Stallions who finished as the second seed in Region 4 behind the Sweet Water Bulldogs. As for the Stallions, Coach Scottie Jones had this observation. "South Lamar has a very good team," Jones said. "They are very big and athletic and throw the ball well on offense. We will need for our guys to play one of their best games of the year to beat them." The Panthers and Stallions are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 10, in Millport.
