Both the girls' and boys' basketball teams at Thomasville Middle School began their season on a positive note last week. The two teams traveled to Sweet Water on Thursday, November 2, for their season openers and both came away with a convincing win.

The TMS Lady Tigers got everything started posting a 42-20 win over the Sweet Water Middle School Lady Dawgs. Both teams struggled on the offensive end throughout the first two quarters with the Lady Tigers holding a 12-8 lead at halftime. "Our youth and in experience showed early in the game," Coach Jim Sims said. "We had too many turnovers and three starters got in foul trouble before the half. I guess we can blame it on first game jitters."

There were definitely signs of improvement in the second half with the TMS ladies putting up 30 points over the final two periods. "We seemed to settle down some and had good effort in the second half," Coach Sims said. "Our hustle and pressure on defense led to several turnovers that we converted to points and our patience in making the extra pass got us some good looks at the basket on offense."

Kyera Rowe led the TMS Ladies in scoring pouring in 19 points. She was followed by Amber Coston and Alexis Watters with seven and six points respectively while Crystal Calhoun and Natalie Washington had three points each and Shikira Holt and R'Lexis Pugh had two apiece.

On the boards Rowe was again the leader pulling down 10 rebounds while Alexis Watters had eight, Jasmine Brackett had seven and Amber Coston had six.

Following suit, the TMS boys posted a 35-9 win over the Sweet Water boys in their opener. Once again neither team seemed to be able to find the range consistently on offense in the first two quarters with the TMS Tigers holding a 10-6 lead at halftime. But like the girls game, the second half was a different story with the Thomasville boys exploding for 25 points in the final two quarters to win the game going away.

Leading the scoring for the TMS Tigers was Rayshawn Cain with 18 points. Darius Bowen and Zack Ross were next with four points each while Tyler Hayes had three. Rounding out the scoring was Chris Coston, Monterrio Evans, and Kendarius Spears with two points each.

Spears led the Tigers on the boards with 13 rebounds followed by Hayes with eight and Coston with five. Bowen, Chris Davis and Spears were the assist leaders for TMS with two each.

On the defensive side Cairl and Spears led the Tigers with six steals apiece followed by Bowen with four.

Despite the slow start by the Tigers, Coach Russell Wright was pleased with his team's effort. "I was very pleased with our defensive effort and hustle throughout the game," Wright said "We've got a great group of players and I expect us to only improve as the season goes along."

The pace was set to pick up for both teams this week as they both were scheduled to play three games including their home openers with Leroy on Monday, November 6, followed by road games at Leroy on Tuesday, November 7 and at Wilson Hall on Thursday, November 9.
