Bulldogs cage Wildcats 48-7
The Sweet Water Bulldogs used a balanced offensive attack and a crushing defense to post a 48-7 win over the Millry Wildcats in the first round of the AHSAA State Playoffs this past Thursday, November 9. The home standing Bulldogs rushed for a 169 yards and passed for 166 yards in the victory. Sweet Water took control early taking their first offensive possession of the game 68 yards for a score. Dominic Holt completed the drive with a one-yard plunge with 8:01 remaining in the first quarter. Ty Glass tacked on the extra-point and the Bulldogs led 7-0. The Sweet Water defense, which had stuffed Millry on three downs during the Wildcats' first offensive series, rose up big on the visitors' next series as well stopping them this time on a fourth and inches taking over at the Millry 39. From there the Bulldogs were in the end zone in short order when Anthony Landrum scampered in from 22 yards out. Glass was on the mark again and the Bulldogs led 14-0 with 5:35 left in the first quarter.
Things only got worse for the Wildcats as the second quarter got under way. With the relentless Bulldog defense keeping the pressure on, the Wildcat punter, following another three and out, was unable to get the punt off due to a bad snap. He was tackled at the Millry 14-yard line, playing right into the hands of the opportunistic Bulldogs who picked up their fourth touchdown of the night a few plays later when Anthony Landrum blasted in from three yards out. Glass kept his string going and the Bulldogs led 28-0 with 6:15 remaining in the second quarter. The Sweet Water defense got in on the scoring act a little over minute later when Antonio Landrum picked off an errant Wildcat pass and raced 37 yards to pay dirt. Glass split the uprights and the Sweet Water lead stood at 35-0 with 5:08 to play before intermission. With the Wildcat offense continuing to sputter, the Bulldogs found themselves with one more offensive opportunity before halftime. And like a good team should, they didn't let it slip by them scoring their sixth touchdown of the half on a 69 yard pass from Drew Luker to Anthony Landrum with 1:33 left in the half. Glass made it six for six and the Bulldog lead was 42-0. Antonio Landrum put an exclamation point on the first half recording his second interception of a Wildcat aerial with :23 remaining. As the second half got underway, the Wildcats appeared to get the break they needed to start turning things around when they recovered a Bulldog fumble on the kickoff. Taking over at the Sweet Water 27-yard line, they went immediately to the air hoping to strike quickly. The Bulldog defense would have none of it however as safety Travis Young gathered in the pass which had been tipped by another defender and raced 80 yards for yet another Sweet Water touchdown. Glass missed the extra-point but the Bulldog lead was 48-0 with 10:28 to play in the third quarter. That's the way it would remain for almost all of the second half as the Bulldog Coaches substituted freely. The Wildcats did manage to get on the scoreboard with :16 remaining in the game when Marques Reasor ran it in from four yards out. The extra-point was good making the final 48-7. The Bulldog defense, which held the Wildcats to 98 total yards of offense, was led by Tevin Davis with nine tackles. Following him were; Anthony Landrum with eight, Trey McIntosh with seven and Antonio Landrum with five. McIntosh also had a sack to his credit while Antonio Landrum had two interceptions and Travis Young had one. On offense Dominic Holt led the rushing attack with 56 yards and one touchdown on nine carries while Anthony Landrum had 51 yards and three touchdowns on six carries. In the air Drew Luker was 9 for 10 for 166 yards and one touchdown. Leading the receivers was Travis Young with three catches for 39 yards and Anthony Landrum with two catches for 62 yards and one touchdown After the game a happy Coach Stacy Luker gave his Bulldogs mixed reviews. "Naturally I am happy we won," Luker said. "But I don't think it was one of our best efforts. We were not very focused and we didn't play with much intensity." "I was pleased with our passing game in the first half and the fact that we scored enough early that we were able to rest some of our starters in the second half," he continued. With a first round win under their belt the (10- 1) Bulldogs turn their focus to the (8 -3) Ariton Purple Cats who will come to Sweet Water this week for a second round match-up. "We definitely need to find our focus this week in practice," Stacy Luker said. "Ariton has won six straight games and has been averaging over 40 points per game in their last three. They are big and physical on both sides of the ball and like to play 'smack you in the mouth' football. They will pose a great challenge for us." The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff this Friday, November 17 at Nolan Atkins Stadium.
