Zoning plan headed for approval

Thomasville's second public hearing on its proposed zoning ordinance passed with little fanfare Monday night.

Most of the meeting dealt with slight changes to the zoning overlay map to avoid splitting individual pieces of property into two separate zoning classifications.

Included were an extension of the agricultural zoning segment along cemetery road to include Smiley Road, changing three lots along Bashi Road near Choctaw Corner from residential to business, changing property at the intersection of Hwy. 43, and Hwy. 5 from multifamily residential to business, changing Harold Reynolds property from business to agriculture, and changing several lots on Moody Rd. from multifamily to single family.

The council decided not to act on a request from Marc Prescott to change a lot from single family residential to multifamily residential for a mobile home park at Gates Drive. "I believe that would be spot zoning," Mayor Sheldon Day said.

The other changes included revising the language of the ordinance regarding signage.

The restrictions for signs to be 1,000 feet apart were dropped to 500 feet. A ban on electronically lit and revolving billboards was dropped. The maximum sign size was increased from 330 square feet to 400 square feet.

The council authorized the changes discussed and will consider the ordinance for adoption at its meeting Monday night.
