No money in Thanksgiving
Arthur

I think I've come up with a solution to prevent the deluge of Christmas advertising coming near Halloween.

We just need to turn Thanksgiving into a gift-giving holiday.

Yeah, we need another gift-giving holiday like we need another hole in the head, but it's about the only way I see us staving off the advance Christmas advertising.

Thanksgiving is the introspective holiday. It is a time to pull in with family, consider the blessings of one's life and of course, give thanks, for the gifts of divine providence.

Well, as you can clearly see, no one's going to make any money off that.

The traditional Thanksgiving feast was about the only thing available for retail exploitation, that's been pushed about as far as it will go.

It is, of course, no longer enough to just have a turkey. Now we have to have it deep fried, or a turdurken, a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken.

We have pumpkin pie angst now.

Of course, the only folks making money off that are the turkey growers and the makers of canned pumpkin pie filling.

And, well, that's just not enough is it?

So, I say we just cave in, and agree to some sort of gift or card exchange for Thanksgiving. Maybe that will hold off the Christmas advertising avalanche for a few weeks, because retailers wouldn't want to rob their Thanksgiving sales with Christmas ads.

I have no idea if it will work, but maybe it's worth a try.

I also think there should be a national retail workers weekend. Sometime after Christmas, all those harried retail employees get two days off for having to put up with 6 a.m. door-storming shoppers the day after Thanksgiving, and for putting up with the rest of us for the next 25 days.

I'd be willing to give up a couple of days of clothes shopping to give those poor folks a break.

They talk about seasonal depression around the holiday. I wonder how many of those folks work in retail.

I hope you enjoy Thanksgiving. I know I have much to be thankful for this year.
