No word on alcohol restrictions yet The final public hearing meeting for the proposed Zoning Ordinance was held Monday night in Thomasville. The Thomasville City Council will make the final changes to the ordinance and vote on it this coming Monday night. What is not contained in the zoning ordinance is the language dealing with alcohol such as how far an establishment that sells alcohol can be located from a school or church. This is a major concern for members of the Citizens Against Alcohol Sales in Thomasville (C.A.A.S.T.). Thomasville Mayor Sheldon Day said that the city had obtained liquor ordinances from Jackson and Monroeville and that Debra Fox with the Southwest Alabama Economic Development Office and others were working on a liquor ordinance for Thomasville. Day said that ordinance would be presented to the Thomasville City Council meeting this Monday night. This is a big reason to be concerned. We are working hard to defeat the alcohol referendum in Thomasville. But if it does pass, it doesn't look like the citizens of Thomasville will have much time, if any, to react to what this liquor ordinance might say or not say. The city has held these public hearings on zoning, but what most citizens don't understand is that we haven't seen one sentence up to this point about what is going to be contained in the liquor ordinance. I believe the city leaders owe it to the people to give us time to study the liquor ordinance before they vote on it. Those in favor of alcohol sales in Thomasville are set to present a petition in a few days asking the city to set a vote on the issue.
