TMS boys basketball team off to 5-0 season start
The Thomasville Middle School Boys Basketball Team upped their season record to 5 -0, winning four games over the past two weeks, In the process they made it a clean sweep over the middle school boys from Sweet Water posting 52-20 win at home this past Thursday, November 16. In that game the TMS Tigers took a 25-6 lead at the half and cruised to the finish. Leading the scoring for the Tigers was Darius Bowen with 20 points. Following him with seven points each were; Chris Davis and Kendarius Spears while Zack Ross chipped in six. Others scoring two points apiece were; Jack Binkard, Rayshawn Cairl, Chris Coston, Artemus Gaines, John Knight, and Michael Thornton. On the boards Tyler Hayes led the charge with eight rebounds followed by Zack Ross and Kendarius Spears with seven each and Chris Coston with six. Davis led the team in assists with four with Cairl and Spears recording three each. On defense Bowen led the team with five steals followed by Cairl with four and Spears with three. Week before last the Tigers picked up a win over Leroy at home on Monday, November 6 and then followed that win up with a pair of road wins, one over the same Leroy squad and the other over Wilson Hall Middle School. The TMS Boys' home opener with Leroy finally went their way but not until they scored the final 15 points of the game and pulled out a 43 - 29 win after trailing 29-28 with approximately four minutes remaining in the game. "I am so proud of the way our guys never gave up and fought back to win the game," Coach Russell Wright said. "Great hustle, defensive pressure and our ability to control the boards in the second half were the keys to our victory." Kendarius Spears led the Tiger scoring attack with 15 points followed by Rayshawn Cairl with 13 and Chris Davis with seven. Others picking up points included Darius Bowen with four, Chris Coston and Tyler Hayes with two each. Hayes was the leader on the boards with nine rebounds while Cain and Spears had six and five respectively. Davis was the assist leader with six followed by Cairl with four. On defense Spears with seven steals and Davis with five led the Tigers. In the rematch with Leroy on Tuesday, November 7, the Tigers actually trailed the Bears 23-20 at halftime but out scored their hosts 34 - 15 over the final two periods to claim the victory. "We knew it was going to be tough playing them on back to back days especially considering how we won the game here," Coach Wright said. "But our effort was great and we actually seem to stay composed and focus more when it is close or when we are behind." Darius Bowen had the hot hand in this one pouring in 21 points. Kendarius Spears followed him with 10 points while Rayshawn Cairl had seven and Chris Davis six. Others getting in the scoring column included Josh Knight with four points, Chris Coston and Artemus Gaines with three. On the boards Spears led the charge with eight rebounds followed by Tyler Hayes with seven and Coston with six. Davis was the assist leader with five while Cairl and Spears had two each. The same trio led the defensive effort as well with Davis picking up five steals while Cairl and Spears had four apiece. The Tigers finished the week with their second road win posting a 59-47 win over the Wilson Hall Middle School Bulldogs. Starting fast, TMS jumped out to a 23-6 lead in the first quarter. They extended it to 55-29 by the end of the third quarter and then substituted the entire fourth period. "I can't say enough about this team," Coach Wright said. "As usual our effort was super and the teamwork, unselfishness, and sportsmanship the players displayed was awesome." In the game Darius Bowen led the Tiger scoring with 20 points followed by Rayshawn Cain with 17. Following them with seven points each were; Chris Davis and Kendarius Spears. Tyler Hayes had four points, Monterrio Evans two while Zatrix Taylor and Michael Thornton had one each to round out the scoring. On the boards Bowen, Cain, Hayes and Spears all had four rebounds while Jack Binkard and Davis had three. Davis was the assist leader with seven followed by Spears with four. On defense Bowen and Spears led the charge with seven steals while Cairl had six and Davis had five. Following a break for Thanksgiving TMS will be back in action on Monday, November 27, when they host Wilson Hall in a rematch. They will follow that game up with a road trip to Jackson on Thursday, November 30 to take on the Middle School Aggies. In both situations the boys' game will be the second game of a girls' and boys' double header that begins at 5 p.m.
