Zoning passes council
By Arthur McLean Editor
Thomasville's proposed zoning and land use ordinance was approved Monday night with one no vote cast by Alberta Dixon. "I'm not voting against zoning, I'm voting against the part that was not clear," she said, explaining her vote. "I think we've needed zoning for a long time." Dixon was referring to the clause in the zoning ordinance that grandfathers existing uses of land into the ordinance. Marc Prescott also presented his concerns over how the city would determine how non-conforming uses would be grandfathered under the new zoning ordinance. Prescott also presented his concerns that his investment in developing a small mobile home park on Gates Drive could be damaged since the zoning map places it within a single-family residential district. Under the zoning law now in place, the park will be considered a non-conforming use, meaning if any units were added to or replaced at the park, Prescott would have to seek a variance from the city's zoning board.

"We've had over a year of discussion and worked long and hard to get input from citizens and incorporated much of the citizen input," Mayor

Sheldon Day said. "I want to thank the zoning task force for all their hard work on it. I also want to thank the community. I think we've had a lot of good give and take on this."

In other business, the council approved a bid of 67,500 from Richardson Communications for replacement of the police and fire dispatch console at city hall. Richardson was the only bidder.

Day announced that the Southwest Alabama Medical Center has hired a firm to finance the new hospital project

and would be applying for special assistance from HUD for rural hospitals. The application process for the HUD assistance would likely take 90 days, he said.

Day also reported that Boeing and Atmore-based Muskogee Metalworks announced a mentor-protégé program last week. The partnership came as a result of the two companies meeting at the national supplier conference held in Thomasville.
