Light Reflections
We are dealing with a society that is always looking for more. Historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., says that our society is marked by “inextinguishable discontent.” We are searching for what is better and what is next. We want a better job, pay, house, car and a saving plan that will solve all future situations. We have a propensity to live for the next thing-the next vacation, the next purchase, and the next ultimate trill. Mankind has been his own worst enemy against contentment. We despise the thought of just being satisfied with the blessings already given. For many the Christmas season which is to be a “season of blessings” will turn out to be a burden of financial disaster. People live for “show and tell” while forgetting about real contentment. The “society pleasers” will wear a smile of as they over extend credit. Under the smile is a panic of frustration while living from one pay check to another. The monster of fear has pushed them into a pit of poor choices. This has taken away their joy and inner peace. The Bible says, “not that I speak of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” When we have a relationship with Christ then we know who we are and what we possess. To know Christ is to be complete. Christ is our joy, satisfaction and gift of hope. Jesus is the reason for the season. This is his birthday celebration. This is God’s gift to mankind. We need to embrace the Christ child with a heart of humility. We need to visit him in prayer and solitude. This is a holy time for remembrance. It is sad that people will use this time to get intoxicated and miss the true meaning of Christmas. People will waste away in greed and self indulgence. People will regret their indebtedness and give out of obligation. Let us make a change in our lifestyles and bring back the true Spirit of Christmas.
We can attend a worship service, give to the poor and serve the lonely. We can give to a child whose parent is serving our country in the military. We can dare to be different by giving the gift of time and true love to our family. We can learn to be thankful and content. This can be the best Christmas ever by keeping Christ first in our heart and actions. Have a Christmas of joy and completeness.
