The Sweet Water Bulldogs traveled to Maplesville this past Friday, December 1, and defeated the Maplesville Red Devils 28-6 to win their AHSAA semifinal match-up. With the win the Bulldogs improved their season mark to 12-1 and qualified for the lA State Championship game this Saturday, December 9, at Legion Field in Birmingham. This trip to the finals marks the second time the Bulldogs have participated in the Super Six in the last three years. They captured the lA title in 2004 with a 35-7 win over the R. A. Hubbard Chiefs. This will be the Bulldogs’ first trip to Legion Field with their 2004 game having been played at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium due to a conflict with Legion Field at the time.

In Friday’s game with Maplesville the Bulldog offense collected 22 first downs and piled up 476 yards of offense while their stingy defense held the Red Devils to seven first downs and 201 yards of offense including only 56 yards rushing.

Both defenses pitched a shut out in the first half; with the game knotted 0-0 as the two teams retired to the locker room for the halftime break. In some respects it wasn’t quite as even as the score indicated with the Bulldog offense piling up yardage without scoring points while the defense was holding the Red Devils to only 31 yards of offense.

Things picked up in the second half with Sweet Water scoring on all four of their possessions. The Bulldogs took the first one in using 13 plays and 6:43 of the third quarter clock to drive the ball 68 yards for a touchdown. Dominic Holt struck pay dirt on the drive barreling in from one yard out with 5:17 remaining in the third quarter. The extrapoint attempt by Ty Glass was blocked putting the Bulldogs on top 6-0.

Following that drive, the Bulldog defense which had been tough the entire first half stepped up big again with a goal line stand that kept Maplesville out of the end zone after they had picked up a first and goal at the Sweet Water nine yard line.

On the heals of the big goal line stand, the Bulldogs took off on another classic wing-t drive that covered 87 yards in 15 plays and resulted in an Anthony Landrum one yard touchdown run. Landrum then ran in the two point conversion and the Bulldogs led 14-0 with 9:27 to play in the fourth quarter.

Sweet Water added another touchdown with 3:30 remaining in the third period when Dominic Holt scored his second

touchdown of the game on a 10 yard scamper. Ty Glass added the extra-point and the Sweet Water lead was 21-0.

Maplesville did manage to get on the scoreboard with 2:56 remaining in the game scoring on a five yard pass. Their two point conversion attempt failed but they had cut the Bulldog lead to 21-6.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the scoring with :37 remaining in the game when Anthony Landrum rambled 27 yards for his second touchdown of the night. Glass booted the extrapoint making the final 28-6.

Leading the Bulldog ground game which piled up 454 yards was Anthony Landrum with 215 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries and Dominic Holt with 161 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Drew Luker also contributed 68 yards to the total on 12 carries. In the air Luker was 2 for 8 for 22 yards and two interceptions.

Over on defense Dominic Holt led the way with nine tackles followed by Anthony Landrum with five tackles. Johnny Lockett had one sack and four quarterback hurries for the Bulldogs and Michael Robinson had two interceptions.

Looking back on the win Bulldog Skipper Stacy Luker had nothing but praise for his charges. “That was a very physical game last Friday,” Luker said. “I thought we played hard from the opening whistle to the final horn. I am very proud of our effort and the character and maturity we showed, particularly in the second half. It was an important win and one that puts us one step closer to our goal.”

Looking ahead to this week, Luker had this to say about the 13-1 Cedar Bluff Tigers that the Bulldogs will meet in the finals. “Cedar Bluff is a very good football team that is used to winning and has a great tradition. They have been to the quarterfinals each of the last five years prior to this season. They are very big and physical along their offensive front and have an outstanding 6’3” 200 lb. quarterback who has committed to play for Purdue next year. He reminds me of Tim Tebow of Florida and in addition to being an accomplished passer is their leading rusher. They will be a real challenge for us but we are excited about having the opportunity play in the championship.”

The game between Sweet Water and Cedar Bluff is set for an 11 a.m. kickoff this Saturday, Dec. 9, at Legion Field in Birmingham.
