Courthouse to close Dec. 22 - 27 The electrical power to the Clarke County Courthouse will be shut off Friday afternoon, Dec. 22 so that connections can be made to the new wing. The courthouse will close at 1 p.m. that day and will reopen at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27. Contractors plan to work over the Christmas holidays, taking off only Christmas Day. The courthouse would likely be closed the day after Christmas anyway since the state is expected to take that day so the downtime will not be excessive, commissioners noted in their work session Monday. During the E911 portion of the meeting, commissioners heard that a huge portable generator will be brought in to operate the 911 center located in the courthouse. Safe in-door kerosene heaters or electric heaters will be available for heating the 911 offices. Commissioners asked E911 Director Becky Neugent about the possibility of rerouting all 911 calls elsewhere. She said that was a possibility that she would look into. The portable generator is still coming and will be set up and tested to make sure that it can handle the E911 equipment. Both Neugent and commissioners noted that the Christmas weekend will likely be a busy time for 911 calls and everyone agreed that a reliable alternative electrical source must be in place. Other 911 business Neugent told commissioners that a power surge affected the 911 center in late November. Then, Tuesday, Dec. 5, a fiber optic line was cut between Grove Hill and Jackson, idling 911 for several hours. Calls were rerouted through Jackson and Thomasville.
Grove Hill’s long distance phone service and Internet service was out for several hours and Southern Lincs were also affected by the outage.
