Matthews here to sign books Clarke County native Mary Chapman Mathews and photographer Chip Cooper will be at the Clarke County Museum in Grove Hill Monday, Dec. 18 to sign copies of “A Mansion's Memories,” a book of history and photographs of the 1841 President's Mansion at the University of Alabama. She will be autographing copies from noon until 2 p.m., making it convenient for people to stop by on their lunch hour. The proceeds of all books sold during the signing will benefit the museum. “A Mansion's Memories” was first printed in 1980. Mrs. Mathews resided in the mansion from 1969 until 1980 during the presidential tenure of her husband, Dr. David Mathews, also a Clarke County native. The Mathewses were fascinated by the house's history and when she decided to do a book, she opted to let the mansion itself serve as narrator. The book was updated and reprinted for the University's 175th anniversary in 2006. Cooper made the photographs for the updated edition. He made many of the 17 color ones in the book's updated edition. There are also 69 black and white photographs in the book. The new edition updates the occupants of the Mansion, picking up the four presidents since the Mathewes lived there 26 years ago. Everyone who loves Alabama
history should find the book interesting, especially University of Alabama fans and alumni. The book would make a great Christmas gift, said museum organizers of the event.
