ASCC offers honors program Students at Alabama Southern are now invited to explore a new and exciting learning opportunity! Alabama Southern offers an honors by contract option for most classes. By selecting to participate in the Honors Program, students are qualified to graduate with Honors Distinction, transfer their honors credits to their university of choice and participate in a number of exciting learning experiences uniquely designed for students involved in the Honors Program. Current honors students ended their first semester of the Honors Program by attending a seminar on the Demopolis campus of Alabama Southern. Dr. Allen Brown, English professor at the University of West Alabama, spoke to the students concerning Alabama history, the history of the city of Demopolis and the folklore surrounding two historical landmarks Gaineswood and Bluff Hall. Students were also provided a tour of these historical homes. “The Honors Program at ASCC is designed to encourage motivated students to stretch academically,” said Barbara McMillan, Psychology instructor at Alabama Southern and Director of the Honors Program. “At Alabama Southern, students select which classes to take for Honors credit, and agree to fulfill an Honors Contract under the guidance of their instructor. The work completed under the contract offers interested, capable students opportunities to enrich the regular curriculum.” Students also participate in an Honors Seminar which connects them to a community of peers who strive for excellence. The Honors seminar meets once each month during the semester and covers topics on leadership, humanities, service projects, etc. Students who have participated in a full year of the Honors Program will be eligible to participate in a trip in May 2007 to Washington D.C. Students will spend four days in our nation’s capital and in the summer of 2008, students will have the opportunity to travel to Europe. More opportunities for travel within the United States and abroad will be available to participating students. To graduate with honors, minimum requirements include completion of four honors classes of the student’s choice and two honors seminar courses. There is no minimum grade point average to begin and the rewards are many. “We were originally approached by Dr. Robert W. Halli, Jr. the Honors Director at the University of Alabama about the likelihood of an honors program at Alabama Southern,” said Dr. John A. Johnson, President of Alabama Southern Community College. “When Dr. Halli began to describe the requirements and transferability of classes to the University of Alabama and other universities across the state the possibilities seemed very encouraging.” Students who wish to participate in the Honors Program should complete an Honors application, available in the Student Development offices on each campus of Alabama Southern; register for and attend the Honors Forum which meets one Friday each month during the semester; and lastly, the student must sign an Honors Contract with one or more of their instructors for the courses in which they desire to pursue honors credit. “The Honors Program will give our students the opportunity to enhance their learning experiences and develop a deeper understanding of college level material,” added Dr. Johnson.
Students interested in participating in the Honors Program should contact, Barbara McMillan at 251-575-3156, ext. 240.
