Before I begin announcements, let me give a quick congrats to our Tigers. At our peprally last Friday, a florist delivered a complimentary black wreath sent by Escambia County High School. More ... Oct. 4 was the day students at Thomasville Elementary School invited their grandparents to help them pick out a special book during the week-long book fair. Theme of this year's fair was Reading is Fun. More ... The students chosen to participate in the 2007 Sweet Water High School homecoming court pictured front row, from left, are: Cassie Sager - junior maid, Kierra Riley - senior maid, Abby Grochwski - queen, Leslie Perkins - senior maid and Melanie Curtis - junior maid. Sweet Water High School students participated in the fourth annual wear your cap to school day for "Caps for Kids." Approximately 150 students participated by wearing their favorite hats to school. More ... Patricia Jones and Anne Downey met with grandparents of students from Sweet Water High School to discuss volunteering in the library and in the classroom. The focus for the volunteers will be to help children in the areas of reading and reading comprehension. More ... On Thursday, Oct. 11, F.S. Ervin began homecoming celebrations with the presentation and crowning of the 2007 - 08 homecoming court. More ... The fourth graders at F.S. Ervin Elementary School are studying the relationship between animals and their habitats, as well as some of the ways animals behaviorists study animals. AMSTI afforded students the opportunity to have hands on observation of millipedes, dwarf African frogs, and the fiddler crabs. The students recorded their observations and comparisons in their science logs. "My students are more motivated since we began using a new approach to science and using AMSTI science resources to make scientific investigations," remarked Edward Coles, fourth grade science teacher. On a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon, the sound of taps could be heard playing from Sweet Water High School. The reason for this music was the Flag Pole Dedication Ceremony that was held Sunday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. A crowd of about 50 people attended the ceremony which also included a 9-11 remembrance. More ... Sweet Water High School band participated in the River Festival of the Bands performed in Demopolis on Sept. 27. The band is under the direction of Adam Anderson and under the field direction of Charlie Glover. At the River Festival of the Bands, the Sweet Water High School band received a superior ranking for their overall performance. More ... Students at Thomasville Elementary left the presentation by children's book illustrator Michael P. White with an excitement and desire to draw pictures themselves. White, born and raised in Atlanta spent many years working in restaurants and doing local and regional art festivals before illustrating his first book. More ... The Thomasville FFA Chapter attended Ag Day/ Outdoor U at Auburn University on Sept. 26. While on campus, the chapter learned about the many agricultural related career opportunities such as fisheries, horticulture, and animal sciences. More ... Sweet Water High School Student Government Association recently held an election of officers and representatives. Marengo County Probate Judge Nelson made the election a realistic experience of the voting process for the students. Senior SGA officers elected were Abby Grochowski - president, David Morgan - vice president, Jasmine Gamble secretary and Quinton Jones - treasurer. More ... Smokey Bear and Tim Kelley with the Alabama Forestry Commission visited students in grades K-2 at Thomasville Elementary School during fire prevention week. Each student received a ruler from Smokey and learned what to do in case of a fire and how to prevent one from happening. PHOTO BY TONYA JOYCE More ... The Thomasville Middle School Scholars' Bowl team recently received a donation of $500 from South Alabama Wood Inc. Team members extended thanks and commented the money will be used to purchase a much-needed buzzer system to used during practice sessions as well as tournaments. Alabama Wood Inc., presents the check to Sally White, Collin Clardy, Montana Prescott and Satyn Spears, members of the Scholars Bowl team. Marlee is the daughter of Bayne and LeAnn Moore. More ... Sweet Water High School has begun its gift wrap fund-raiser which will be used to purchase LCD projectors and screens for the faculty. These will be used to technologically enhance student instruction. The fund-raiser will continue thorugh Friday, Oct. 19. Pictured above are Sawyer Jones and Margaret Moore.
