Schools to screen for scoliosis

On January 23 & 24 Thomasville City School nurses will screen all children enrolled in grades 5-9 to check for scoliosis, a side-to-side curve in the spine. The purpose of this screening is to recognize, at the earliest stages, any deviation from normal, so that the need for treatment can be determined. Scoliosis screening is required annually by law for school children in the state of Alabama in grades 5-9 (ages 11-14).

The procedure is a very simple one. The trained screener observes the child's posture while standing and bending forward. If scoliosis is suspected, you will be notified so that you may get further evaluation from your own physician.

If your child is receiving medical care for scoliosis from a physician, provide a physician's statement regarding the treatment in order for your child to be exempted from the screening.

Contact the school if you have any questions. Thank you for your cooperation.
