Winter clinic part of success Although no one directly involved in the organization of the Thomasville Winter Clinic can or would take credit for the overall success baseball has had in Thomasville and the surrounding area over the past seventeen years, there are those that believe it has played a part. Since the beginning in 1990 it has been the goal and purpose of those involved with the Winter Clinic to work hand in hand with the existing summer recreation programs and outstanding high school programs in this area to provide yet another opportunity for the kids in the area to learn the fundamentals of the game of baseball and hone their existing skills. As such it has been endorsed by many of the high school coaches in the area with al number of them making it a point to strongly encourage every player involved in their program to attend. The same can be said about those directly responsible for the summer recreation programs in the area. It is a case of everyone working together to offer the young people they work with all the opportunities they possibly can to become the best they can be. Apparently the partnership is working well as a quick review of the period of time the clinic has been in existence reveals that in Thomasville alone some 35 young men who have participated in the clinic over the past seventeen years have gone on to play baseball at the collegiate or professional level. Of that number nine who graduated from Thomasville High School and one who has direct ties to Thomasville are still playing college baseball and four who were once Thomasville Tigers are now playing professional baseball. The four professional players; Corwin Malone (Chicago White Sox), Nick McCurdy (Baltimore Orioles), Josh Morgan (Chicago White Sox) and Hunter Vick(Tampa Bay Devil Rays) will all be returning to the clinic again this year to serve as instructors. Each of them feel strongly about the benefits of the clinic and have expressed on more than one occasion how it is their goal to give the young people attending the clinic the same opportunity they had when they themselves were participants years ago. This year's clinic will be held on Saturday, January 20, with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m. at Thomasville High School and the clinic instruction beginning at9:00a.m. The clinic is open to young people 8 - 18 with the hours for those participants 8- 12 run- ning from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and those 13 - 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.There will also be an adult clinic for youth coaches and parents that is scheduled to coincide with the hours of the 8- 12 group. The cost of the clinic will be $10 for all youth participants and $15 for those participating in the adult clinic. Included in the cost are a noon meal and a free t-shirt for the first 300 paid registrants.
