Whitehead keynote speaker at UAB

Beth Whitehead
On Dec. 16, 2006, the University of Alabama- Birmingham's (UAB) Physical Therapy Department graduated its first class of students with the clinical doctorate degree in physical therapy.

Keynote speaker for the event was Beth Whitehead, CEO of HealthActions Physical Therapy and Wellness and a UAB graduate.

In addition to her position at HealthActions, she is also a graduate of Leadership Alabama. She is the recipient of the Marilyn Gossman Professionalism Award.

Whitehead shared with the graduates the history of education in physical therapy and UAB's leadership role in the changes that have occurred in physical therapy education over the years. She has served as Alabama's Chief Delegate to the 1979 American Physical Therapy Association's House of Delegates. The motion to transition to the postgraduate level of education, which ultimately resulted in the current doctoral program, was made by the thendirector of UAB's School of Physical Therapy, Marilyn Gossman, and was passed in the House of Delegates that year. The address also reviewed the five keys to success, vision, faith, courage, humility and leadership and their application to the physical therapy profession.

At the conclusion of the day's events, Whitehead was presented the UAB School of Health Professions, Department of Physical Therapy's "Alumni Leadership Award" in recognition of her contributions to the advancement of education and practice in the field of physical therapy.
