Lady Tigers move to 2 & 1 in area

The Thomasville Lady Tiger basketball team brought their season mark to 10-2 and their area record to 2- 1 picking up wins over Clarke County, Coffeeville, Jackson, and UMS-Wright while losing to Escambia County. The games with Escambia County and Jackson were both Area contest while the other three had no bearing on the Area standings.

The first of the five games came on the road against Escambia County on Friday, January 5, with the Lady Tigers falling to the Lady Blue Devils 51-39. Turnovers and poor foul shooting proved to be the difference in the game in which the Lady Tigers trailed by one point at half-time.

Leading the scoring for Thomasville in the losing effort was Keenya Martin with 12 points followed by Ebony Early with 11. Sondra Lanier and Nicole Washington added five points each to the Thomasville total while Ashley Crawford scored four points and Dominic Watters two. On the boards Early led the team with six rebounds followed by Watters with four. Martin was the assist leader with three. On defense, Lanier led the team with three steals followed by Washington with two.

Following the road loss, the Lady Tigers started a seven game home streak with a 53-41 win over arch rival Clarke County on Saturday, January 6. In the game the Lady Tigers turned a two point lead at halftime into the 12 point win by creating scoring opportunities with their tenacious second half pressure defense.

Ebony Early was the scoring leader for the Lady Tigers in the game pouring in 14 points, followed by Keenya Martin with 10. Shaneka Nicholson and Tamara Robinson added seven points each in the game while Dominic Watters recorded six. Shelby Crawford and Sondra Lather chipped in three points apiece and Ashley Crawford got two to round out the scoring. Lather came up big on the boards pulling down 10 rebounds followed by Shelby Crawford and Early with five each. Robinson was the assist leader with two. Early was the defensive leader as well with six steals followed by Nicole Washington with three.

The Thomasville Ladies took on the Ladies of UMS-Wright next on Tuesday, January 9, and dispatched the Lady Bulldogs back to Mobile, defeating them 38-34.

The victory was a direct result of a great team effort on both offense and defense battling back from a five point halftime deficit to pick up the win. Ebony Early had the hot hand for the Lady Tigers in this one scoring 14 points with Keenya Martin following close behind with 12. Ashley Crawford was next with five points with Shelby Crawford and Nicole Washington scoring two apiece and Sondra Lather and Dominic Watters scoring one point each. Ashley Crawford and Martin pulled down seven rebounds each to lead the Lady Tigers followed by Early with six. Shelby Crawford led the team in assists with two. On defense, Washington led the team in steals with three while Ashley Crawford and Early had two each. Early also blocked three shots and Shelby Crawford blocked one on the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Aggies of Jackson High School came calling next on Friday, January 12. Just like they had done in both of their previous home games the Lady Tigers used a stifling pressure defense to pull off a 44-27 win over their neighbors from south Clarke County. Ebony Early was the scoring leader for the Lady Tigers racking up 18 points. Shelby Crawford and Keenya Martin were next with nine points each. Ashley Crawford, Shaneka Nicholson, and Kierra Westbrook contributed two points each while Nicole Washington and Dominic Watters added one each to round out the scoring. Early had a big night on the boards as well, pulling down 17 rebounds. She was followed by Martin with eight and Ashley Crawford with seven. On defense Washington led the charge with five steals followed by Ashley Crawford and Nicholson with two each. Early also blocked two shots and Martin blocked one in the contest.

The Lady Tigers made it a clean sweep in the county defeating the Lady Panthers of Coffeeville 71 - 15 when they hosted the girls from west Clarke County on Saturday, January 13.

Keenya Martin was the scoring leader for Thomasville with 11 points followed by Ashley Crawford with eight. All fifteen of the Thomasville Ladies scored points in the game as Thomasville substituted freely from the first quarter on. Kierra Westbrook led the Lady Tigers on the boards with seven rebounds followed by Shelby Crawford and Candrea Welch with five each. Nicole Washington was the assist leader with three followed by Desiree Bettis, Sondra Lanier and Martin with two apiece. Over on defense Martin was the leader with five steals followed by Early, Britany Stallworth and Washington with four each. Early also had two blocked shots against the Lady Panthers.

Up next for the Lady Tigers as they continue the long home stand were two key area matchups with Escambia County on Tuesday, January 16, and with Monroe County on Friday, January 19. The Lady Bulldogs of Sweet Water end the home stand when they come to Thomasville on Saturday, January 20. Following that the Lady Tigers are scheduled to travel to Jackson for a rematch with the Lady Aggies on Tuesday, January 23.
