Water department dealing with sewer issues The Thomasville water board will begin working with Church's Chicken on Hwy. 43 to get a grease trap installed. Mayor Sheldon Day, who is also water superintendent said the restaurant's lack of a grease trap has posed some problems for the city's sewer system in that area. All the other restaurants that use fryers in Thomasville already had grease traps installed. "We're also trying to find out if a grease trap is a requirement from the state health board," Day said. In addition to the grease problem, the city has been working on tracking down stormwater infiltration into the sewer system. Older pipes in the city's sewer system can at times allow stormwater to seep into the sewer system, requiring the sewer treatment plant to treat the stormwater in addition to the sewage. Day said crews have discovered problems in old pipes made from terra cota under Front Street and other locations. Several of the collapsed and cracked pipes have been fixed, Day said. Crews will continue to search for other compromised pipes when it rains. Day also reported that he will be meeting with engineers to finalize plans for the water treatment plant and the extension of water and sewer lines to the L-P plant site. The engineers have also begun to draw in the location of water and sewer lines in the city's south industrial park.
Day said he expected to have firm dates for the completion of major projects after the meeting.
