Baseball pros come to T'ville
By Charlie Anderson

Kids listen to some of the pros teaching at Thomasville's annual baseball clinic held Saturday at Gates Drive Park.
The annual Thomasville Winter Baseball Clinic, which was held this past Saturday, January 20, proved to be one of the best yet in the eighteen year history of the event. Not only was there a good turn out with some 160 kids participating, but the weather which was sunny with temperatures in the mid to upper fifties made it conducive to hold all the secessions outside.

As has been the case for the past several years, this year's clinic drew participants from several locations outside of the immediate Thomasville area with some of them traveling from as far away as Citronelle, Daphne, Fairhope, Robertsdale, and Satsuma to name a few areas.

The eighteen member clinic staff which included instructors from four Major League Organizations, two Independent Professional Teams, and four Colleges or Universities, provided a tremendous amount of individual and group instruction over the course of the day for the young people attending.

The adult clinic which ran simultaneously with the youth portion of the clinic also drew participants from a wide range, including high school coaches, youth coaches and parents who want to better understand how to help their children learn the fundamentals of the Great American Pastime.

As usual the organizers of the event were quick to point out that it would be impossible to host an event of this scope and magnitude year after year if it were not for the large number of volunteers who are willing to pitch in and do their part. They also mentioned those who graciously served as hosts and hostesses during the week before the clinic, entertaining the instructors including taking them hunting and fishing.

Last but not least, thanks were expressed to all the sponsors who make it financially feasible to host this type of event in Thomasville. The list included Major Sponsors; America's Best Value Inn, Brooks Chevrolet, Burke's Mechanical Inc., First United Security Bank, McAbee's Construction, McDonad's, Pope's Real Estate and Weyerhaeuser as well as corporate sponsors; A&B Electric, Browder & Sons Veneer, Coca Cola, Contract Maintenance, Delmar Restaurant, Dozier Hardware Co., Dozier Oil Co., Edward Jones Investments, Fat Daddy's, The Garden, The Grill, Larry's Photography, Law Offices of Stuart Dubose, Lewis Pest Control, Louisiana- Pacific, Chris McCants - State Farm Insurance, McGraw- Webb Chevrolet, N. & R. Sports Cards & Collectibles, Norman Foods, Old Mexico, One Stop Building Supply, People's Corner, Pizza Hut, Pizza Pro, Dr. Terry Pugh, R&B Services, Ryan's, Dr. Jerry Schreiner, Scotch Plywood Co., Sheffield Motors, Dr. Jeffrey Stoudenmire, Thomasville Meat House, Thomasville Times, Tim Watts Jewelers, Wal-Mart, Wilson & Drinkard Attorneys.

Even though the eighteenth Thomasville Winter Clinic is now history, the work has not ended for the organizers as preparations for number nineteen are already underway.
