DuBose gets into fender-bender at Choctaw County courthouse

No one was hurt and damages were minor in a twovehicle "fender bender" on the courthouse square in Butler last week but the incident made the news anyway.

Newly-seated Circuit Judge Stuart DuBose was driving a vehicle that had a bump with a Baber's Leasing delivery truck on Church Street Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Butler Police Chief Chuck Breland said that DuBose identified himself to the other driver and explained that he would be in the courthouse. He parked 50 feet away and went into the courthouse.

Breland told the Mobile Press Register it wasn't proper to leave after an accident occurs. "We wouldn't recommend it," he said.

Police arrived shortly after the accident and talked to DuBose inside the courthouse. The other motorist declined to file a report.

That was the second accident in a week's time that DuBose was involved in. His wife, Allison, was listed as the driver in an accident on Highway 280 in Opelika on Jan. 17. DuBose was a passenger and was there to attend a judge's conference. Details of that accident were not readily available from Opelika Police.

DuBose took office Jan. 15 after being elected last year to a circuit judgeship in the First Judicial Circuit.

His election generated a bit of controversy because of a matter that happened when he was a practicing attorney.

The Alabama State Bar Association issued a 45-day suspension of his law license because of a will he wrote for a man he never met. The suspension was to fall between his election and his taking office.

The Alabama Supreme Court rejected the reprimand as not being severe enough and sent it back to the bar's discipline committee for reconsideration. The bar has not acted on the matter to date and DuBose took office Jan. 15 without incident.
