It's all about power in politics
Recently there was a story in the Register about the newly elected Democratic majority in Alabama's legislature rewriting some of the rules they work under.

The new rules would limit the amount of power the minority party had to oppose things like redistricting in the state.

Redistricting could then be done more easily by the ruling party, allowing it to gerrymander voting districts that would likely favor its candidates.

Of all the things the legislature could be working on for the state of Alabama during its first days of a new session, this is what it thought important.

Of course, the Democrats in Alabama aren't the first to do this. The Republican majority in Texas did the same thing a couple of years ago.

These incidents should make it crystal clear to anyone that the goal of elected officials has shifted away from governing toward power: specifically the gaining and or keeping of power.

The same story is true in Washington D.C. It's true just about everywhere.

The party that's out of power is obsessed with retaking it, and the party that's in power is obsessed with maintaining and even growing it.

If only they would apply the same time, effort and creativity towards actually improving our states and our country, we'd likely have very few complaints, except taxes, of course.
