Tigers sweep county tournament
Keenya Martin with 12 points and Ebony Early with 10 were the scoring leaders for the Lady Tigers in the contest followed by Sondra Lanier with nine and Dominic Watters with seven. Ashley Crawford and Shaneka Nicholson added four points each while Britany Stallworth and Nicole Washington had two and Candrea Welch one. On the boards Lanier was the leader with 10 rebounds followed by Early with eight, Martin and Washington with seven each. Nicholson was the assist leader with four followed by Washington with three. On defense Washington led the charge with three steals while Lanier and Martin had three take-a-ways each. To qualify for the championship game the Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Panthers of Coffeeville High School 52-8 in a preliminary game played on Thursday, Jan. 25. After seeing their starters totally dominate play in the first quarter of the game, the Thomasville coaching staff substituted freely throughout the balance of the game getting many of their younger players a tremendous amount of experience.
Three of the Lady Tigers, Ebony Early, Sondra Lanier and Keenya Martin, were selected for the All- Tournament team at the end of the tournament with martin taking home the MVP honors. Rounding out the six member squad were; Johnueshia Donald and Alexandria James from Jackson and Stephanie Robinson from Clarke County.
Tiger varsity beats Panthers, Aggies to claim crown The Thomasville High School varsity basketball team improved their season mark to 12-6 with wins over Coffeeville and Jackson in the Clarke County Tournament which was played in Thomasville this past week. With the pair of wins the Tigers also captured the County Championship. It all started on Thursday, Jan. 25 when the Tigers, playing excellent defense, got the best of the Coffeeville Panthers 57-38. Curtis Lane was the scoring leader for the Tigers in the game with nine points followed by Antron Hold with eight. Daril Jackson was the leader on the boards for the Tigers pulling down 10 rebounds while Lane and Holt grabbed eight and seven respectively. Jackson was the assist leader for the Tigers in the game as well dishing out six while Delvonte Harris recorded four. Over on defense Jackson and Lane led the charge with four steals each while Holt picked up three blocked shots.
Because of their play in the tournament Daril Jackson, Curtis Lane and Tysean Thompson were selected to represent the Tigers on the All- Tournament team. Joining them on the five man squad were Cory and Marcus Besteda from Jackson. Thompson was also named as the Tournament MVP. Tiger 'B' Team beats Bulldogs in finals The Thomasville Tiger 'B' team made it a clean sweep for the teams from Tiger- Town in the Clarke County Tournament when they defeated the Clarke County 'B' team 54-38. Leading the charge for the Tigers in the game was Mitchell Cowan with 16 points followed by Derrius Griffin with 12 and Shaq Jackson with eight.
For their efforts Griffin and Jackson were named to the All-Tournament team with Griffin being named MVP as well. The Thomasville 'B' team improved their season mark to 13-4 with their tournaments wins.
All three of the Thomasville teams were slated to end their regular season with road games against Coffeeville on Tuesday, Jan. 30 and Clarke County on Friday, Feb. 2. The Lady Tigers who finished second in the area will be in area tournament action on Thursday, Feb. 8 when they travel to Atmore to play Jackson at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the tournament. The varsity boys who also finished second in area play will begin first round tournament play on Friday, Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in Jackson against the Escambia County Blue Devils.
