Civic Center work progressing quickly so far
By Arthur McLean

A pile of debris is formed in the middle of a classroom as workers stripped the interior of the old Thomasville High School building recently.
Work on the old Thomasville High School is progressing quickly so far, said Mayor Sheldon Day.

Interior demolition is nearly complete. "I've been pleasantly surprised at how quickly it's moving," he said.

Crews began working on the building, stripping out some of the interior walls to reconfigure some of the interior spaces.

Classrooms on the south side of the building will be turned into a large meeting/conference room that can be divided by movable walls.

The entrance of the building will be reconfigured to allow for city offices including reception and a ticket window. The mayor's office and city clerk's office will also be moved to former classroom spaces in the front and northern side of the building.

Classrooms on the front south side of the building will be converted into a gallery area, which could house art exhibitions and receptions. It is also envisioned as a gathering area for attendees to events that will be held in the building's auditorium.

Classrooms in the south wing will be converted into dressing rooms for theatrical productions and other spaces.

The actual renovation work is scheduled to begin shortly after the demolition phase is completed in the next few weeks.

The initial work was bid at $3.5 million. That sum will be paid from lodging and food taxes approved by the council in 2006.

The city's income from the taxes is believed to be enough to pay for the work and leave some for operating and maintenance expenses on an ongoing basis.

The city offices to be vacated will allow for some expansion of the police department, Day said.
