Spiritual Reflections
Like sheep, all of us have gone astray
Pat Ozment, Jr.
When I think about sheep, it seems strange that I have seldom preached a sermon about them. The Bible has dozens of passages that deal with the subject. There just never has been an occasion for me to spend much time observing sheep.

Sheep are not that common in the places that Peggy and I have called home, but that has changed. There are sheep everywhere you go here in Tamale. They aren't restrained by fences, around lush green pastures. They aren't like the sheep you normally picture in your mind.

These sheep are often multicolored, their wool matted, and dirty. They roam the dusty dry and barren landscape with their heads down close to the ground searching for any morsel of food they might find. You will see them everywhere you go. They mingle with the traffic in town, sometimes blocking the street or the sidewalk. They are in the market, they are on the school grounds, and they honor no boundaries as they roam from one residence to another trampling what they can not eat.

No one here should have trouble falling asleep, because there are plenty of sheep to count. "Who do these sheep belong to?" I asked our neighbor. "No one knows," she replied, "but be careful, if you should run over one with your lorry, you would find out very soon whose sheep it was." I can't help but think about the old song that said, "We are poor little lambs who have lost our way, bah, bah, bah."

The sheep that pass through our yard and through the town are without a shepherd. They have no one to watch over them, no one to provide for them, and protect them.

In Isaiah 53 we are told, "all of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him."

There are a great many people, here in Tamale, in America, and all around the world, who are like lost sheep. They need to be introduced to the "Good Shepherd," who will restore their souls. See you in Church.
