PHVFD scores equipment grant If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. That could be the motto for the Pine Hill Volunteer Fire Department's quest for a grant. Recently, it was awarded $37,000 from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The department has been turned down several times in the past, so the announcement was welcomed in Pine Hill. "We're tickled to death," said Joe Hicks Jr. "This will really help us." The grant totals $35,150 in federal funds and will require a local match of $1,850. The department will use the grant to purchase many new pieces of equipment. It will purchase 13 Pass devices. The Pass device is attached to a firefighter's clothing, and begins to beep if the firefighter has not moved after a predetermined time, alerting other firefighters that there might be a problem. The department will also be able to buy 11 sets of turnout gear, hoses, three new radios, two foam machines new fire hose nozzles and a ventilation fan.
"This is great news, and we're proud our fire department was able to get this grant," said Mayor Harry Mason. "They do a lot for our community, and there's no way we can repay them."
