Lady Tigers win area tournament

The Thomasville High School Lady Tigers edged the Lady Blue Devils of Escambia County High School 48-47 this past Saturday, February 10, to claim the Area One championship. In the game, which was played in Atmore, the Thomasville Ladies put together one of their best games of the season on both sides of the ball to defeat the host Escambia County Ladies. The win was the first for Thomasville out of three meetings between the two schools this season.

Ebony Early was the scoring leader for Thomasville in the contest pouring 16 points. Following her with eight points each were Ashley Crawford and Shelby Crawford while Keenya Martin added six points and Nicole Washington four points. Rounding out the scoring with two points apiece were; Sondra Lanier, Shaneka Nicholson, and Dominic Watters. Early was also the leader on the boards with nine rebounds followed closely by Shelby Crawford and Martin with eight apiece. Early, Martin, and Tamara Robinson led the team in assists with one each. Over on defense Lather and Washington led the team with two steals each and Shelby Crawford and Early both had one blocked shot.

To get to the championship game on Saturday, the Lady Tigers defeated their cross county rivals, the Jackson High School Lady Aggies 49-29 on Thursday, February 8, in the preliminary round of the tournament. In this game also played in Atmore at Escambia County High School, the Lady Tigers took a commanding 29- 13 lead by the end of the first two quarters and cruised to the 20 point win. Keenya Martin with 12 points and Ashley Crawford with 11 were the point leaders for the Lady Tigers with Shelby Crawford and Nicole Washington on their heels with eight points each. Ebony Early and Dominic Watters chipped in four points each and Tamara Robinson added two points to round out the scoring. Martin was the rebounding leader for Thomasville with seven followed by Early with six and Shelby Crawford with five. Washington was the assist leader with three with Robinson next with two. On defense Washington was again the pace setter picking up six steals while Early had four and Martin three. Early also picked up five blocked shots in her outstanding defensive effort.

Because of their efforts in the tournament three Lady Tigers were selected for the All- tournament team. That threesome included; seniors Ebony Early and Keenya Martin and Junior Ashley Crawford.

By virtue of their winning the Area Tournament, the Lady Tigers will be playing host to the Lady Tigers of T. R. Miller High School in the Southwest Sub-Regional Tournament this Thursday, February 15, at 7:00 PM. The winner of that game will then advance to the Southwest Regional Tournament on the campus of the University of South Alabama next week.
