This past Wednesday, February 7, on the day that is now commonly known as national signing day, Sweet Water High School senior Dominic Holt signed a letter of intent with the University of West Alabama to continue his education and play football for the Tigers next fall. Holt, who started 63 out of 64 games in his five year stint on the Bulldog varsity, played a vital role on both offense and defense in the resurgence of Sweet Water football over the past five years, including winning 1A State Championships in 2004 and 2006. As a fullback on offense he rushed for 5,266 yards on 792 carries and scored 78 touchdowns. From that position he also had 14 pass receptions for another 335 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile over on defense in that same period he recorded 607 tackles, 18 quarterback sacks, four fumble recoveries and two pass interceptions from his linebacker position.
This past season in his final campaign for the Bulldogs, Holt rushed for 1,410 yards on 193 carries and scored 25 touchdowns while catching two passes for 21 more yards. His defensive numbers in his final season were just as impressive and included 107 tackles and six quarterback sacks.
Looking on at the signing, Bulldog Head Coach, Stacy Luker had this to say about his senior player. "I can't say enough about Dominic and what he has meant to our program hear at Sweet Water. Not only has he been an outstanding player for us but his leadership on the team has been critical. I am extremely happy for him and I know without a doubt he will be a credit to his family and our program in the future and asset for the University of West Alabama."
All indications at this time point toward Holt being a linebacker a West Alabama although the possibility of him seeing some time at fullback hasn't been completely ruled out.
