THS edged by Gulf Shores 7-6 in opener
By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

The Thomasville High School Varsity baseball team opened their 2007 season this past Monday, February 19, with an eight inning 7-6 loss to the Gulf Shores Dolphins. The game, which was part of the opening round of the annual Hank Aaron Classic, was played in Bay Minette at Baldwin County High School.

It was obvious from the outset that neither team was in mid-season form, as critical errors and costly mental mistakes plagued both squads. For the Tigers it was base running blunders that twice took them out of potential big innings that proved to be the difference.

Things looked good for the Tigers early as they scored three runs in the top of the first to take the lead. The Dolphins responded in their half the inning however, capitalizing on a couple of mistakes to tie things up at 3-3. Thomasville regained the lead in the third going up by one at 4-3. From there the Dolphins scored one run in each of the next three innings to take a 6-4 lead over the Tigers into the seventh inning. The never say die Tigers would not go away however and battled back to tie the game at 6-6 before ultimately losing it in the eighth.

Bradley Parnell got the start on the mound for Thomasville and worked four innings in which he allowed four runs on five hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen while striking out seven. Jamie Morgan followed him for one inning allowing two runs on one hit and three walks while striking out one. Andrew Parten, who was ultimately tagged with the loss, finished things up giving up one run on one hit, two walks and one hit batsman while striking out four.

Over on offense Jake Overstreet and Justin Smith led the way in the seven hit Tiger attack with two hits each including a double by both. Alex Buford, Bradley Parnell and Andrew Parten each added one hit to the total. Overstreet and Parnell led the team in RBIs with two each followed by Parten with one. Scoring runs for the Tigers were Paul Noble and Smith with two apiece followed by Buford and Overstreet with one each.

Play in the Hank Aaron Classic was scheduled to continue for the Tigers on Tuesday, February 20, with a 4:00 PM match-up against the 6A Theodore Bobcats back in Bay Minette followed by games on Wednesday and later in the week against yet to be determined opponents.

Following play in the Classic, Thomasville is scheduled for their home opener against Washington County High School on Tuesday, February 27 at 6:00 PM.
