OBITUARIES Dave Edward Bates Dave Edward Bates (Retired Command Sergeant Major), the youngest of three sons and a daughter born to the late Robert Bates, Sr. and Annie Culpepper Bates, was born in Fulton, on May 26, 1938. He departed this life on Thursday, December 21, 2006. Bates served as a soldier in the United States Army for over 30 years. He served two tours in the Vietnam War, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart Award for injuries he sustained during one of those tours. He was also the recipient of numerous other awards and ribbons throughout his distinguished military career. He also served tours both abroad and in the United States, having retired as a Command Sergeant Major in 1986 and making El Paso, TX his permanent home. During his early childhood he was destined to be a servant of the Lord and to minister to others as he began Bible teaching at Spencer Chapel A.M.E. Church in Fulton. While serving active duty in the Army he became a member of Smyrna Seventh-Day Adventist Church in 1979. He served faithfully with commitment to his church and God as a member of the Eldership, Sabbath School Teaching, and the Outreach Ministry (such as the Rescue Mission), in addition to several other ministries in the church. Survived by his wife, Frances B. Bates: his two daughters, Cheryl Mavritte and Crystal Bates; his only grandchild, Jasmine Mavritte and Manuel Pena (who he considered his son). He is also survived by one sister Lorene Bates Kemp; one brother Willie Bee Bates; one son-in-law Brett E. Mavritte, nine sister-in-laws, ten brothers in-law, two God-children, Michael Atkins Jr. and Chloe Garcia, one niece Theresa Ridgeway, two nephews Robert Bates, III and Kevin Bates, two very dear friends Ruby Brown and Lucinda Hines, several great-nieces and nephews, many dear cousins and a host of other relatives and friends. His brother Robert Bates, Jr. preceded him in death. Interment on January 23, 2006 at 1500 hours (3 p.m.) in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA 22211. Hattie Jo Davis Hattie Jo Davis, age 90, of Dixons Mills, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007 at Mobile Infirmary in Mobile. She was born September 1, 1916 in Dixons Mills. She was a retired rural mail carrier and a life long member of Dixons Mills Baptist Church in Dixons Mills. Funeral services were held at Dixons Mills Baptist Church on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Major Clay Davis officiating. Interment was held at Dunning Cemetery, in Dixons Mills. She is survived by: 2 sons Jimmy (Nan) Davis of Sweet Water and Stan (Bertha) Davis of Guntersville; 3 daughters, Jo (Rom) Gilbert of Keystone Heights, FL; Floyce (Jerry) Dunn of Sweet Water and Gail (Bruce) Baker of Dixons Mills; 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Thad Dunn, Tony Dunn, Brad Dunn, Todd Davis Ben Davis, Alan Baker, David Smith and Jimmy Dixon. O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home of Thomasville, directing. Sabrina Dickinson Sabrina Dickinson, age 37, of Thomasville, passed away February 14, 2007 at her residence. A native of New York City, NY she was formerly employed as a NYPD Communications Officer. Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at the Antioch Baptist Church in Nicholsville, at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Donald Reed officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She is survived by: husband Aaron Dickinson of Thomasville; daughter, Jalyssa Klass; son, Jaequan Dickinson both of Thomasville; two sisters, Denise and Diane Pearson and one brother, Gary Pearson all of NY. Thomasville Memorial directing. Henry Lee Dotson Henry Lee Dotson, age 65, of Chance died February 24 in Philadelphia, PA. He was retired from Scotch Lumber Company. Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 3, 2007 11:00 a.m. at Chance Baptist Church with Rev. Charley Marshall officiating. Burial was in the Fellowship Cemetery in Chance. He is survived by: his wife Pezzie Dotson of Chance; mother, Dot Dotson of Cincinnati, OH; 2 daughters, Gwen Hicks and Schar Dotson both of VA; 3 sisters, Alyce Lipkin of Detroit, MI; Betty Snell and Lilly Laurence both of Cincinnati, OH ; 2 brothers, Tommie Dotson, Jr. and L.C. Dotson both of Flint, MI; and 4 grandchildren. Thomasville Memorial directing. Charles Nettie Drinkard Charles Nettie Drinkard, Jr., age 55, of Linden, passed way on Monday, February 26, 2007 at Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital in Demopolis. He was born April 25, 1951, in Selma. He was a cattle farmer. He was Director of Central Alabama Co-op and a member of the Alabama Cattlemen Association. Funeral services were held at Cornerstone Church on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Rob Wynne officiating. Interment was a Linden Memorial Park in Linden. He is survived by: wife, Susie Drinkard of Linden; father and mother, Bill Drinkard, Pat Drinkard both of Linden; two daughters, Alice (Gary) Majors of West Blocton, Carol (Kevin) Dixon of Linden; two sons, Chase (Suzanne) Drinkard and Gabe Drinkard all of Linden; two sisters, Anna Carol Dixon of Albertville and Patti Gibbs of Camden; brother, Tim Drinkard of Auburn; two grandchildren, Cooper Dixon and Elizabeth Drinkard both of Linden. Active pallbearers were: Billy Trotter, Jared Hasty, Rich Quinney, John Brame, Jeremy May, and Steve Miller. Honorary pallbearers were: Wayne Pope, Charlie Martin Jimmy Sealy, T. A. Simpson, Russell Gibbs, John Gibbs, Sebie Sellers, Milton Vick and Robert Wallace. O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home of Linden, directing. Inez "Sis" Hinson Watts Inez "Sis" Hinson Watts, age 83, of Linden passed away on March 3, 2007 at her home. She was born on February 23, 1924 in Octagon. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and a retired teacher from the Linden City Schools. Graveside funeral services will be held at Laurel Cemetery on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Stuart Pope officiating. She is survived by: son, Joseph (Ann) Watts of Birmingham; five daughters, Suzanne (Stuart) Pope of Thomasville; Cynthia (Craig) Gamble of Camden; Julia (Billy) Milstead of Thomasville; Madeline (Bill) Hildreth of Brewton; Margaret (Bill) Till of Somerville; sister, Pheobe H. Mitchell of Demopolis; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
