Help is always close at hand
Don't tell the people of Southwest Alabama they don't help out.

After the deadly tornado struck Miller's Ferry, the call went out for help, and help surely came. There were so many volunteer responders, some had to be turned away for fear of overwhelming the scene.

Help came from South Marengo, Pine Hill, Surginer, Thomasville, Fulton and Grove Hill, to name a few. The only thing that was asked was what was needed.

Of course, all these fire departments and rescue squads are staffed with volunteers.

Miller's Ferry was hit hard, of that there is no doubt. But the response to the call for help was swift. One could barely drive down the narrow road leading to site for all the vehicles that had made their way in to offer help.

People got to work with chainsaws and search parties were formed. If anything, there might have been a few too many people there, but, not knowing the extent of the damage, these volunteers rushed headlong into the breech, believing it better to be turned away than not to go at all.

We're sure the people of Miller's Ferry appreciate it, and we can all rest a little easier knowing we are surrounded by such people willing to give of themselves.
