Taking Names and Keeping Score
I was always intrigued by that segment and have thought many times how appropriate what was being said in those lines is in our society. Although it was staged as comedy, it really pointed out how some people who consider themselves above being called a gossip are really only hypocrites. I'm afraid as hard as some of us may try there are times we all fall into gossiping. It doesn't always carry the venomous tone that most pure unadulterated gossipers use but it does come from our lips as fact when in fact it is nothing more than conjecture based on something we heard, something we have speculated about or something we assumed. In other words we find ourselves speaking authoritatively about something we don't truly understand or haven't taken the time to appropriately research. And more times than not what we say has a direct or indirect affect on another person. No area and really no one in our society is insulated from gossip or the effects of gossiping. From the highest positions in our government, throughout the business world, even in our churches and other faith based initiatives there seems to be no lack of idle gossip about the organizations and people in those organizations. Just think about the entertainment industry where every one and everything are fair game when it comes to gossip. Unfortunately it can also even be found many times within families and among so called best friends. Naturally the sports world with all its passion and intensity is nothing but fertile ground when it comes to gossip. Like it or not, sports and those that coach and play the games are all an integral part of our daily lives now and as such are the focus of a lot of attention. Even the President of the United States and principle leaders in other parts of the world keep a finger on the pulse of the sports and often take time to acknowledge those who have reached levels of greatness in their particular sport. Unfortunately, with the extra focus and attention the gossip about those involved only reaches a greater level and sadly, now it includes all those participating and not just those in the upper levels of competi- tion. That means coaches and players alike from the youngest ages up to and through professional ball are often targets of the sharp tongue of today's gossiper. They speak out without proper knowledge of their subject and with no regard to the feelings of others. And for all their claims about telling what they think they know for the good of the program, it's really all about wanting to be seen and heard and more times than not, some selfish agenda.
Maybe it's time we all took a closer look at our own back yard before we start talking about someone else's we think needs to be cleaned. At least then we would be knowledgeable enough to speak on the need for cleaning and cleaning process. Until next time.....be safe!
