Bulldogs go 0-3 in Tombigbee Classic The Sweet Water Bulldogs played three games in the Tombigbee Baseball Classic last week, coming up on the short end of the score in all of them. The Bulldogs played tough in each of the games and actually had a lead at one point in all three of them. Their first action came on Tuesday, February 27 when they met the 5A Citronelle Wildcats. In the game, which was played in Jackson, the Wildcats scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to break a 3-3 tie and then held on for a 4-3 win. Drew Luker, who started on the mound for Sweet Water, took the loss giving up four runs on four hits, two walks, and one hit batsman while striking out five in six innings of work. On offense the Bulldogs were held to only two hits in the game with Dominic Holt and Drew Luker each recording one. Luker had a double for the only extrabase hit and he and Holt had one RBI apiece to lead that category. In addition to losing, the Bulldogs suffered another big blow in the game when senior outfielder Dominic Holt suffered a dislocated ankle in the first inning of the contest that will keep him out four to six weeks. Both the other games the Bulldogs played in the tournament took place on Saturday, March 3, in Jackson. In the first game of the day the Bulldogs battled the host Jackson Aggies down to the wire before losing 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh. Heath Hill started on the mound for the Bulldogs and pitched five innings before giving way to Drew Luker two batters into the sixth inning. During his stint on the mound Hill gave up seven runs on seven hits and six walks while striking out four. Unfortunately one of those runs tied the game up in the sixth and scored on a balk. Drew Luker, who was charged with the loss, finished the game allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one in one plus innings. Meanwhile over on offense Drew Luker led the way for the Bulldogs with three hits followed by Anthony Landrum with two. Joining them with one hit each were; Cory Downey, Antonio Landrum, Tate Luker and Scottie Nelson. In the extrabase hit category both the Luker boys and Scottie Nelson each had a double. Drew Luker led team in RBIs with four followed by Nelson with two, Anthony Landrum and Tate Luker with one apiece. In their final game of the day and the tournament Sweet Water fell to Clarke County 7-3. Ty Glass, who went the distance on the hill for Sweet Water, was charged with the loss. In six innings he allowed seven runs on nine hits, three walks and two hit batsmen while striking out nine. Over on the offensive side of things, Sweet Water was held to only four hits with Ty Glass, Anthony Landrum, Drew Luker and Tate Luker picking up one apiece. Drew Luker's hit was a double while Glass's hit was his first homerun of the season and accounted for the teams only RBI in the game.
With their early season mark now at 1 and 4 the Bulldogs are next scheduled to be in action on Friday, March 9 when they host the Wilcox Central Jaguars in a varsity double header. They will follow that up on Saturday, March 10, with a trip to Chatom for a JV and Varsity double header against Washington County.
