Girl killed in Sunny South

A 15-year-old girl is dead and her twin brother is in a juvenile detention facility after a shooting Monday night in Sunny South.

"We got a call after 5 p.m. Monday that there was a shooting at 190 Carson Rd. in Sunny South in our jurisdiction," Pine Hill Police Chief John Brown said. "Upon arrival we found a 15 year old female shot by shotgun blast dead on living room floor of the residence."

Those at the scene told police the shooting was an accident. "They were apparently playing and got into some sort of argument. He got the gun and chased her with it when it went off," Brown said. The gun was a 12 ga. singleshot shotgun.

The boy, whose name was not released, has been taken to a detention center in Greensboro. " We are treating it as a homicide investigation," Brown said. The Alabama Department of Forensic Science is investigating the scene.

The boy has been charged with manslaughter, with a warrant was issued Tuesday. "Hopefully the community will see how dangerous guns are and keep them locked away from children," said Chief John Brown.

The department received support from the Wilcox County Sheriff's Office and Alabama Highway Patrol.

Drug bust

On March 8, 2007, from the results of a joint undercover operation, with 4th Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force Agents, Alabama State A.B.C. Agents, Wilcox County Sheriff's Office and the Pine Hill Police Department, a search warrant was executed at Ms. Lilly Calhoun's residence in Sunny South. Seized in the raid was crack cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, one handgun and U.S. currency.

Arrested was Wayne Derrell Davis, 21 years of age, B/M of Thomasville and Robbin Shante Calhoun, 27 years of age, B/F of Sunny South. Both subjects was charged with; unlawful possession of controlled substances, unlawful possession of marijuana 2nd Degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

More arrests are expected soon; "as I've said before there are people who are already caught and just don't know it yet," said Pine Hill Police Chief John Brown.

"This operation is our continuing fight against the illegal drug trade in our area, and we will not let up on the illegal dealers and users, and our intention is not only to slow down but stop this criminal activity, and to send as many people to prison who do not elect to stop it," he said.

Fraud indictment

Jessica Kimbrough of Peachtree apartments in Pine Hill was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of fraud following Hurricane Katrina. She is accused of participating in a scheme to defraud the Red Cross of relief funds by claiming to be living in Mobile when the storm struck.

The woman's indictment is a result of numerous interviews and an investigation conducted by the Secret Service and the Pine Hill Police Department. More indictments are expected to follow.
